He became a leading actor there under director Mark Zakharov.

Yankovsky's film career included many diverse projects. He appeared in World War II films like The Shield and the Sword. He also starred in adaptations of Russian classics. These included A Hunting Accident in 1977 and The Kreutzer Sonata in 1987.
