The Megaluridae family, which includes grass warblers, was later found to be a synonym of the Locustellidae family. Today, the family Sylviidae is much smaller. It now contains only 33 species across just two genera, such as Sylvia and Curruca. These remaining species are mostly found in Europe and the Mediterranean.

Different families of warblers have adapted to very different environments. The Acrocephalidae, or marsh and tree warblers, are often found in reed beds, tall grass, or open woodlands. They are often larger than other warblers and may have olivaceous brown feathers. The Cettiidae family includes bush warblers that typically inhabit shrublands and undergrowth.
