This speech outlined a new German defense policy. He increased the national defense budget and sent weapons to Ukraine. He also put the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project on hold. In September 2022, three of the four Nord Stream pipelines were destroyed. Scholz also provided military and medical aid to Israel during the Gaza war. He used his position to denounce the actions of Hamas and other militant groups.
His final years in office were marked by significant domestic challenges. In November 2023, the Federal Constitutional Court issued a major ruling. The court demanded budget cuts to ensure the government stayed within constitutional debt limits. This ruling created a difficult situation for his cabinet. It also contributed to various protests throughout 2023 and 2024. On 6 November 2024, his government's majority collapsed. Scholz dismissed Christian Lindner from his post as Finance Minister. This action broke the existing coalition agreement and led to political instability.
Scholz's time as Chancellor ended with a series of political losses. He lost a vote of confidence on 16 December 2024. This led to a snap election on 23 February 2025. In this election, the SPD lost to the CDU, led by Friedrich Merz.
