Other designs include compliant towers, which use slender, flexible towers to handle lateral forces. These are typically used in depths between 1,000 and 3,000 feet. Tension-leg platforms, or TLPs, are floating structures tethered to the seabed. These tethers eliminate most vertical movement. Spar platforms are also moored to the seabed, but they use conventional mooring lines instead of vertical tension tethers.
The history of offshore drilling shows a steady move from land into deeper seas. In 1891, the first submerged wells were drilled in the fresh waters of Ohio. By 1896, drilling moved into salt water at the Summerland field in California. 

Technological leaps have allowed humans to reach incredible depths. In 1955, the "Scorpion" became the first jackup rig, featuring three electro-mechanically operated legs. The first semi-submersible was discovered by accident in 1961 while operating in the Gulf of Mexico. Today, the scale of these operations is enormous. The Perdido hub in the Gulf of Mexico floats in 2,438 meters of water and cost $3 billion to build. The Petrobras America Cascade is even deeper, operating in 2,600 meters of water. 
Offshore drilling is a global industry with many important basins. Major areas include the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caspian Sea. Huge fields are also found in the Persian Gulf, such as Safaniya and Marjan in Saudi Arabia. Other significant locations include the coast of Brazil and the waters off West Africa. While these platforms provide energy, they also present environmental challenges. This includes managing the hydrocarbons produced and the materials used during the drilling process.
