Long ago, the Odrysian kingdom grew in a place called Thrace.

The Odrysian kingdom was a large and powerful state in ancient Thrace.
This state grew because of changes in the lands around it. Long ago, the Persian Empire had a presence in Europe. The Persians tried to invade Greece between 480 and 479 BC. When the Persian invasion failed, their power in Europe collapsed. This left a gap that the Thracian tribes could fill. The Odrysians used this time to build their own large state. They moved into the valleys of the Hebros river and its many branches. They became much more organized than the smaller tribes before them.
King Teres I was the first great leader of the Odrysians.
Wealthy Odrysian leaders lived very grand lives.

Over time, the great kingdom began to change and break apart. By 400 BC, the state showed signs of getting tired. The kingdom of Macedon, led by Philip II, eventually conquered the Odrysian lands in 340 BC. Later, a leader named Seuthes III tried to bring the kingdom back.

The Odrysian kingdom was a major ancient Thracian state.
The kingdom rose because of a power vacuum in the region. Earlier, the Persian Achaemenid dynasty had a presence in Thrace. They had sent armies under leaders like Darius I and Xerxes I. However, the Persian invasion of Greece failed between 480 and 479 BC. This caused the Persian foothold in Europe to collapse. By 450 BC, Persian authority in the area had vanished. The Odrysians took advantage of this collapse to organize themselves. They established their core territory in the valleys of the Hebros river.
King Teres I was the first powerful leader of the Odrysae. He is credited by the historian Thucydides as the kingdom's founder. Teres I expanded the realm over a large part of Thrace. He built his power on a warrior aristocracy. This was a social class of elite fighters who held high status. Teres I and his son, Sitalces, pursued a policy of constant expansion. They grew the kingdom from the Danube river in the north to the Aegean Sea in the south. Teres I also used marriage to make alliances, such as with the Scythian kingdom.
Under King Sitalces, the kingdom reached its peak of power and wealth.
The Odrysian elite were incredibly wealthy and displayed it through grand burials.

Eventually, the kingdom began to decline and break into smaller parts. By 400 BC, the state showed signs of fatigue. The kingdom disintegrated into three separate Odrysian kingdoms. The northeast became part of the kingdom of the Getae. In 340 BC, the rising kingdom of Macedon conquered these three states. This happened under the leadership of Philip II.

The final stage of Odrysian history involved the Roman Republic. In the late 1st century BC, Rome attacked the kingdom. The Odrysian heartlands became the Sapaean kingdom, which was a client state of Rome. A client state is a smaller nation that is controlled by a larger, more powerful one. Eventually, Rome abolished this arrangement. In 45-46 AD, the area was converted into the Roman province of Thracia.
