As the vehicle moves, the road-wheels turn an axle, which in turn moves a gear system. Each gear is designed to rotate a specific number of times based on the distance covered. One famous historical design comes from the Roman era. Vitruvius described an odometer in the 1st century BC that used a very clever mechanical process. The device relied on chariot wheels with a diameter of 4 Roman feet, or about 1.18 meters. For every revolution of the wheel, a pin on the axle would engage a gear with 400 teeth. This caused a second gear to complete one full revolution every Roman mile. This gear was connected to another part that dropped a single pebble, or "calculus," into a box. To find the total distance, a traveler only had to count the pebbles in the box.

Ancient China also developed its own independent versions of this technology. During the Han dynasty, inventors created what was known as a "li-recording drum carriage."

These carriages used mechanical-driven wooden figures to signal distance. When the carriage traveled one "li," a wooden figure would strike a drum. After traveling ten li, a different figure would strike a gong or a bell. This provided an audible way to track long distances. Some researchers believe these devices were developed by the "huang men court" people, who were skilled at making mechanical toys for the emperor.

By the Song dynasty, these Chinese odometers had become highly sophisticated and decorative. These carriages were often painted red and adorned with carvings of flowers and birds.

They were built with two stories and were pulled by four horses. The engineering was incredibly precise, involving eight different wheels and 285 gear teeth. The road-wheels were 6 feet in diameter, and the internal gear system used various horizontal and vertical wheels to trigger the drum and bell. This complex system ensured that the motion was transmitted like the links of a chain, bringing the mechanism back to its starting point after each cycle.

In the Western world, the development of the odometer continued through the centuries. In the 1600s, Abramo Colorni illustrated odometer carriages in his engineering treatise, "Euthimetria." Later, in 1698, Thomas Savery invented an odometer specifically for use on ships. Even famous figures like Benjamin Franklin contributed to this field. In 1775, Franklin built a prototype odometer for his own carriage. He used this tool to help measure the exact mileage of postal routes, which was essential for his work as Postmaster General.

The odometer remains a vital part of how we interact with transportation and geography. It connects the physical movement of a machine to a mathematical value. From the simple counting of pebbles in ancient Rome to the digital displays in modern cars, the core purpose has never changed.
