The October Revolution was a pivotal political event in 1917.

It was the second of two major revolutions in Russia that year. This uprising was led by the Bolsheviks, a far-left political group. Their primary leader was Vladimir Lenin. The revolution began as an insurrection in Petrograd, which is now known as Saint Petersburg. This event was the main cause of the Russian Civil War. This war lasted until late 1922 and resulted in the creation of the Soviet Union.

To understand the revolution, one must look at the months before it. Earlier in 1917, the February Revolution had already removed Tsar Nicholas II. A new group called the Russian Provisional Government took control. It was led by Alexander Kerensky. However, this government was very weak and faced many internal disagreements. The country was also struggling through World War I. This continued fighting made the government very unpopular with the Russian people.

Russia faced a massive economic crisis during this period. Industrial production dropped by more than 36% compared to 1914 levels. In some industrial areas, 50% of all enterprises closed down. This caused widespread unemployment and made life very difficult. The cost of living rose sharply for everyone. Real wages fell to about 50% of what they were in 1913. Additionally, the national debt had climbed to 50 billion roubles. The country was facing the very real threat of financial bankruptcy.

Social unrest grew among different groups of people. Workers in many cities organized into councils called soviets.

These soviets allowed workers to criticize the Provisional Government. In the countryside, peasants were also very unhappy. By autumn, peasant uprisings had spread to 77% of the country's counties. They often seized land from wealthy landowners. In the cities, many women led "subsistence riots" or "hunger riots." They seized food from shop owners to fight rising prices.

Vladimir Lenin played a crucial role in the Bolshevik strategy. He had been living in exile in Switzerland. To help him return, the German government allowed him to travel through their territory in a sealed train.

Upon his arrival in Petrograd, he issued the April Theses. This document called for the Bolsheviks to take power and end the war. Later, Leon Trotsky led the Petrograd Soviet to vote for a military uprising. This decision set the stage for the actual conflict.

The uprising began in late October 1917. The government tried to stop it by closing newspapers and attempting to close Petrograd.

This led to minor armed skirmishes. Soon after, a full-scale uprising erupted. A fleet of Bolshevik sailors entered the harbor.

Tens of thousands of soldiers joined the Bolshevik cause. Red Guards, who were armed workers, began occupying government buildings. On October 26, they captured the Winter Palace. This was the official seat of the Provisional Government.

The impact of the October Revolution was felt globally. The victorious Soviet Union viewed the event as a triumph for the working class. However, many Western allies intervened against the Bolsheviks during the subsequent civil war.

The revolution also inspired many communist movements around the world. It became a major part of global political history. In the Soviet Union, October Revolution Day was a significant public holiday. Even today, many communist parties continue to celebrate this historical moment.
