It happened during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. These two superpowers wanted to have the strongest nuclear weapons. Other countries also made their own weapons during this time. However, no other nation made them on such a huge scale. This race changed how countries talked to each other for many years. It was a time of great tension and many new inventions.

Building these weapons involved many difficult steps and new science. First, scientists had to find ways to use atoms for energy. The United States used a project called the Manhattan Project to do this. They worked with the United Kingdom and Canada to build the first bombs. At the same time, the Soviet Union worked on its own atomic project. They used materials found in Eastern Europe to help their research. Both sides spent massive amounts of money to grow their arsenals.

This competition began during World War II. The Manhattan Project was a secret mission led by the US military. In 1945, the US dropped two atomic bombs on Japanese cities. These were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by special bombers. Shortly after, the Soviet Union tested its first atomic bomb in 1949. This bomb was named "First Lightning" by people in the West. By the mid-1950s, both sides had created even bigger thermonuclear weapons.

During World War II, the Manhattan Project led by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada developed the first weapons. The Soviet Union also conducted scientific research to build its own atomic bomb project. They eventually secured uranium supplies from Eastern Europe to fuel their reactors. Both sides invested massive amounts of money to increase the quality and quantity of their stockpiles.

Weapon development moved through several distinct technological stages. First, nations developed fission weapons, which use the splitting of atoms. By the mid-1950s, both superpowers had realized deployable thermonuclear weapons. These fusion-based weapons can achieve vastly greater explosive yields than fission bombs alone. The race in nuclear testing reached a peak with the 1961 Tsar Bomba test. Later, scientists focused on the miniaturization of warheads and the development of the neutron bomb.

History shows that the race began during the chaos of World War II. In August 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Soviet Union accelerated its own project following these events. They successfully detonated the RDS-1, or "First Lightning," in 1949. This bomb was similar to the American "Fat Man" design. Throughout the 1950s, the United Kingdom and France also developed fission and fusion weapons. China later developed both types during the Sino-Soviet split.

Competition was not just about the bombs, but also about how to deliver them. Initially, strategic bombers were the only available delivery method. By 1960, both sides had developed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles. This combination of bombers, land-based missiles, and sea-based missiles is known as the nuclear triad. This ensured that a nation could strike even if one part of its system was destroyed. Smaller tactical nuclear weapons were also deployed across various regions. These systems were stationed in places like West Germany, Turkey, and South Korea.

Significant confrontations occurred as tensions rose between the superpowers. The Korean War and the Berlin Crisis of 1961 were major moments of friction. The most significant event was the Cuban Missile Crisis, which brought the world close to conflict. To manage these risks, leaders eventually sought periods of détente, or the easing of tensions. This led to important agreements like the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. In the 1980s, tensions returned with the Strategic Defense Initiative and new missile deployments in Europe.

Diplomacy eventually helped curtail the massive build-up. Under Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union negotiated the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and START I. The dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 ended the Cold War nuclear arms race. Subsequent treaties, such as the 1993 START II and the 2010 New START, worked to reduce stockpiles.
