Ancient geographers even divided Iran into eight segments. Greater Khorasan was the largest of those segments. In the ancient Sasanian era, the province used a specific leadership system. A leader called a Spahbod, or Lieutenant General, governed the area. There were also four margraves who each commanded one of the four parts of the province.
Many famous empires and clans have controlled this land over the centuries. In the year 651, the army of Islamic Arabs invaded the region. The territory stayed under the Abbasid clan until the year 820. Later, the Taherid clan ruled in 896, followed by the Samanid dynasty in 900. During the Muslim conquest of Persia, Khorasan was split into four parts. These parts were named after the four largest cities: Nishapur, Merv, Herat, and Balkh. In 1220, the Mongols of Genghis Khan annexed the territory. After Genghis Khan died in 1226, his son Tolui inherited the land. Later, his son Hulegu became the first emperor of the Mongolic Ilkhanate of Persia.
The province is a very diverse place for the people living there today. Most residents are Shia Muslims, including Khorasani Kurds, Persians, and Khorasani Turks. There is also a small minority of Sunnis, who are generally Turkmen. The ethnic makeup of the province has changed significantly over time. For example, a large population of Lurs once lived here. Most of them eventually returned to their native area in western Iran. There was also a sizeable community of Arabs who settled here during the Arab invasion. By 1875, these Arabs had intermarried so much with Persians and Turks that they became indistinguishable from the local population.
Demographic data shows how the population has shifted in recent years. In the 2006 National Census, the population was 791,930 people across 198,626 households. By 2011, the census counted 867,727 people in 240,885 households. The 2016 census measured the population at 863,092 people in 254,747 households. A large portion of the population lives in urban areas. According to the 2016 census, 484,346 people live in cities. This number represents over 56% of the total provincial population. Bojnord is the most populated city, with 228,931 residents.
