The land in Norrland has three main parts. In the west, there are the high Scandinavian Mountains. The middle part has the Muddus Plains. The eastern coast has a mix of different types of land.
History shows how the borders of Norrland have changed over time. In the past, some parts like Jämtland and Härjedalen belonged to Norway. They became part of Sweden in 1645. Also, Finland was part of Sweden until 1809. During those years, Norrland reached even further into Northern Finland.
There are many important places and natural wonders to find here. The highest mountain in all of Sweden is Kebnekaise. It is located in the Lappland province and stands 2,097 metres tall. The deepest lake in the country is called Hornavan. Many large cities sit near the coast, such as Umeå, Luleå, and Gävle. These cities help connect the quiet, rural areas to the rest of the country. The climate can change from mild near the sea to very cold in the mountains.

People also enjoy skiing in the mountains. There are two very large ski resorts called Åre and Hemavan. Even though the land can be harsh, the nature is truly amazing. Norrland is the largest and northernmost of the three traditional lands of Sweden. While it does not serve an official administrative purpose, it remains a vital historical, cultural, and geographic region. The name originally comes from "Norrlanden," which means "the Northlands." It covers approximately 60% of the Swedish landmass. However, it is the least populated of the three lands, containing only about 12% of the country's total population.
The geography of Norrland is defined by three distinct north-south belts. In the west, the Scandinavian Mountains create a high, rugged landscape. The middle section consists of the Muddus Plains, which cover much of the inland area. The eastern portion features a mixed relief along the coast. Much of the region is covered by boreal forests, which are thick forests found in cold northern climates.
Climate in Norrland varies greatly depending on altitude and distance from the sea. The southern coastal areas, such as Gävleborg, have a humid continental climate. Moving north, the subarctic climate becomes much more common. In the high mountains, the environment shifts to a tundra climate. In these high areas, summer temperatures can average below 10 degrees Celsius. Despite the cold, all low-lying areas remain below the tree line because the summers are mild enough for forests to grow.
Water plays a massive role in the economy and landscape of the region. Long rivers originate in the mountains and flow through the vast forests. These rivers often have extensive drops in elevation. Because of this, Norrland is a major producer of hydroelectricity. In fact, these rivers account for roughly 40% of Sweden's total electricity production. Many major coastal towns are located on the estuaries, which are the points where these rivers meet the sea.
The history of Norrland involves shifting borders and different groups of people. Up to the Middle Ages, the northern provinces of Norrbotten and Lappland were sparsely populated by the Sami, Kvens, and other groups related to the Finns. In the south, Swedish and Norwegian settlers lived alongside the Sami. The borders changed significantly over time. For example, Jämtland and Härjedalen belonged to Norway until 1645. Additionally, Finland was part of Sweden until 1809, meaning Norrland once extended into Northern Finland.
Norrland is composed of nine historical provinces. These are Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Härjedalen, Jämtland, Medelpad, Ångermanland, Västerbotten, Norrbotten, and Lappland.
Natural wonders and industry define the character of the region. Kebnekaise, the highest mountain in Sweden, stands at 2,097 metres in the Lappland province. The deepest lake in the country, Hornavan, is also located here. During the Industrial Revolution, Norrland became a source for the wood and pulp industry. Mines for precious metals are also found in the region. Because of these resources, historical leaders sometimes viewed the area as a source of wealth to be exploited. This is reflected in the famous quote attributed to Axel Oxenstierna, who described Norrland as an "India within our borders."
Because of the cold climate, winter sports are a central part of life. Ice hockey is the most popular spectator sport. The region has produced many famous athletes, such as Peter Forsberg and Henrik Lundqvist. Four teams from Norrland compete in the Swedish Hockey League: Luleå HF, Skellefteå AIK, MoDo Hockey, and Timrå IK. Skiing is also very popular, with large resorts like Åre and Hemavan located in the region. While football is played, Norrland teams have found it harder to compete at the highest level compared to southern clubs.
