He was the valedictorian of his class of 150 students in 1956. He also earned a Master of Science in mechanical and aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. During the Vietnam War, Schwarzkopf served in two different tours of duty. In his first tour, he served as an adviser to the South Vietnamese Airborne Division. He participated in the Battle of Đức Cơ, where he showed great bravery. For his actions, he was awarded the Silver Star. He was also wounded four times by small arms fire during a different assault. This earned him a second Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

In his second tour of duty, he held different responsibilities in Saigon. He served as an executive officer at the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam.
