During this time, people lived as hunter-gatherers. They left behind stone tools and beautiful rock art in the mountains. Some of these ancient stone monuments might even be related to the early buildings in Egypt. As the climate dried out, people moved toward the south and east. They began planting crops like millet and sorghum. They also started working with metals like iron and copper.

The Songhai Empire was centered near the Niger River. In the north, the Sultanate of Aïr grew as a busy trading spot. Traders used camels to move goods across the desert. The Kanem–Bornu Empire also controlled areas near Lake Chad. Later, France colonized the region as part of French West Africa. Niger became its own distinct colony in 1922.

Niger is the largest landlocked country in West Africa. It is also the second-largest landlocked nation in Africa, following Chad. Much of the territory is very dry. Over 80% of the land area is located within the Sahara Desert.

The environment of Niger is defined by its extreme climate and geography. Much of the landscape consists of desert terrain. Some non-desert regions face periodic drought. These areas also experience desertification, where fertile land turns into desert.

Most of the population lives in clusters in the south and west. The capital city is Niamey. It is located in the southwest corner of the country. Niamey sits along the Niger River, which gives the country its name. The exact origin of the river's name remains uncertain.

Niger has a history that stretches back to prehistoric times. Archaeologists have found stone tools in the northern Agadez Region. Some of these tools date as far back as 280,000 BC. During a period called the "Green Sahara," the climate was much wetter and more fertile.

This allowed humans to live as hunter-gatherers. They left behind rock art in places like the Aïr Mountains. These carvings depict animals and figures known as "Libyan warriors." By 4700 BCE, the region saw the development of megalithic monuments. Some researchers believe these structures may have been precursors to the pyramids in Egypt.

As the Sahara dried out, societies changed. People moved south and east to find water. They began practicing cattle husbandry and planting crops like millet and sorghum. During the Neolithic era, people also began using pottery. They eventually learned to work with metals like iron and copper.

By the 5th century BC, the area became a hub for trans-Saharan trade. Tuareg tribes used camels to transport goods across the desert. This trade helped spread Islam throughout the region.

Several powerful empires once controlled parts of modern-day Niger. The Mali Empire dominated parts of the Tillabéri Region during its peak. The Songhai Empire was also very significant.

It was centered on the bend of the Niger River. At its height, the Songhai Empire included much of western Niger, such as Agadez. In the north, the Sultanate of Aïr served as a strategic trading post. To the east, the Kanem–Bornu Empire controlled areas near Lake Chad. These empires were connected by trade routes and the spread of Islam.

In the modern era, Niger's political history has been complex. France colonized the region as part of French West Africa. Niger became a distinct colony in 1922. The country gained independence in 1960. Since then, Niger has experienced five coups d'état. It has also had four periods of military rule. The seventh constitution was enacted in 2010. However, a coup in 2023 led to a military junta called the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.

The economy and social structure of Niger face many challenges. The country is one of the poorest in the world, according to a 2023 UN report. The economy relies heavily on subsistence agriculture. Some people grow crops for export in the southern regions. The country also exports raw materials like uranium ore. Niger faces difficulties due to its landlocked position and low literacy rates. It also deals with jihadist insurgencies. Additionally, Niger has the highest fertility rates in the world. This leads to very rapid population growth.
