Bourbaki is famous for introducing the concept of mathematical structure. This idea focuses on the underlying patterns that define different mathematical systems. This approach is closely related to the broader, interdisciplinary concept of structuralism. Their work was highly influential during the middle of the 20th century. This was a period when many volumes of the Éléments were being released. Their style even informed the "New Math" movement in elementary education during the 1960s.

Even though their publication frequency has declined, the group remains active today. Since 2012, they have published four new or revised volumes. The most recent volume, covering spectral theory, was released in 2023. They are currently preparing at least three more volumes.

The origins of the group lie in the aftermath of the First World War. The war caused a tragic loss of life among French mathematicians. Some estimates suggest that between one-quarter and one-half of ENS mathematics students died.

This created a "lost generation" of mathematical knowledge. Because of these deaths, young university instructors had to rely on outdated textbooks. Henri Cartan noticed this inadequacy while teaching at the University of Strasbourg. He complained to his colleague André Weil about the lack of modern material. This conversation prompted Weil to propose a collective writing project in Paris.

The first unofficial meeting occurred on December 10, 1934, at a café in Paris. Six mathematicians attended this lunch: Henri Cartan, Claude Chevalley, Jean Delsarte, Jean Dieudonné, René de Possel, and André Weil.

They originally intended to write a single textbook on analysis to standardize calculus instruction. They wanted to replace the outdated texts of Édouard Goursat. The group also wanted to include ideas from the Göttingen school, such as those from Hilbert and Noether. Jean Delsarte suggested they start with the most abstract, axiomatic terms possible. This foundational approach was called the "Abstract Packet" or Paquet Abstrait. This ambitious plan transformed a simple textbook project into a massive mathematical undertaking.

The group officially founded itself during a conference in Besse-en-Chandesse in July 1935. During this time, the membership included the original six plus Jean Coulomb, Charles Ehresmann, and Szolem Mandelbrojt.

The name "Bourbaki" comes from two different sources. It refers to Charles-Denis Bourbaki, a 19th-century French general. He had a successful military career but suffered a dramatic defeat in the Franco-Prussian War.

René de Possel's wife, Eveline, "baptized" the name as Nicolas. This allowed the group to publish articles under the full name Nicolas Bourbaki.

Bourbaki's impact on the mathematical community is profound. Jean Dieudonné once remarked that Bourbaki saved French mathematics from extinction. By organizing math into structures, they provided a new way to see the field. They moved mathematics away from isolated calculations toward a more unified, logical system. This helped bridge the gap between different branches of math. Even as the group's influence shifts, their rigorous standards continue to define modern mathematical thought.
