Trọng also acted as a neutral host for global diplomacy. In 2019, Vietnam hosted the North Korea–United States Hanoi Summit. Trọng met with both Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un. This showed Vietnam's role in international politics. He also met with leaders from many other nations. These included Vladimir Putin of Russia and Mauricio Macri of Argentina. 
Trọng's impact on Vietnam remains very significant. He was re-elected as General Secretary for a third term in 2021. This made him the third leader to achieve such a long tenure. He was also elected president by the National Assembly with 99.79 percent of the vote. His era saw major changes in how the party manages its members. He also implemented new rules for how leaders are chosen. These rules helped formalize the process of political succession. He is remembered as one of the most influential leaders in Vietnam's history.
