Some are very large, like Kotelny Island, which covers 11,700 square kilometers. Others are much smaller, like the C-shaped Nanosnyy Island. The islands are mostly low to the ground. The highest point is on Bennett Island, reaching 426 meters.

These islands tell a story about how our world changes. Long ago, they were part of a huge land called the Great Arctic Plain. This plain was part of a place called Beringia. Beringia sat between Siberia and Alaska. At that time, the sea level was much lower than it is today. The coastline was 700 to 1,000 kilometers further north. Eventually, the sea rose and covered most of this plain. This happened within a short time of about 7,000 years. Now, only these islands remain above the water.

People first learned about these islands a long time ago. A Cossack named Yakov Permyakov brought news of them in the early 1700s. Later, in 1712, a group led by M. Vagin reached Great Lyakhovsky Island. Explorers like Yakov Sannikov and Matvei Gedenschtrom visited in 1809. Sannikov even reported seeing a "new land" in 1811. This led to a famous myth about a place called Sannikov Land. Later, the scientist Eduard Toll visited the islands in 1886 and 1892. He traveled over the ice using sleds pulled by dogs.

Scientists study the islands to learn about the past. The ground is made of permafrost, which is soil that stays frozen. This frozen earth acts like a natural freezer. It helps keep old things in a wonderful state of preservation. Explorers have found bones and ivory from mammoths and rhinoceroses. They have even found wood and peat in the high cliffs. The archipelago is organized into several distinct island groups. The Anzhu Islands, also called the New Siberian Islands proper, cover about 29,000 square kilometers. This group includes Kotelny Island, which is 11,700 square kilometers, and Faddeyevsky Island, which is 5,300 square kilometers. Bunge Land links these two islands, though it is occasionally submerged by the sea. Nearby, the small Zheleznyakov and Matar islands are about 5 kilometers long. Nanosnyy Island is the northernmost point of this group. To the south, the Lyakhovskiye Islands include Great Lyakhovsky Island and Little Lyakhovsky Island. Further north and east, the De Long Islands consist of several smaller islands like Jeannette, Henrietta, and Bennett Islands.

Geologically, the islands are a complex mixture of different rock types. The Lyakhovsky Islands contain Precambrian metamorphic rocks and various sandstones and shales. They also feature Jurassic and Cretaceous turbidites, which are sedimentary rocks formed by underwater landslides. The Anzhu Islands consist of Ordovician to Devonian limestones and dolomites. They also contain volcanoclastic strata, which are rocks formed from volcanic material. The De Long Islands are composed of early Paleozoic, Cretaceous, and Neogene sedimentary and igneous rocks, specifically basalt. These rocks are covered by loose Pleistocene and Holocene sediments. These sediments can range from a thin layer to a much thicker deposit.

These islands provide a window into the ancient history of the Earth. They were once part of a massive landmass called the Great Arctic Plain. This plain was part of Beringia, a region that once connected Siberia and Alaska. During the Last Glacial Maximum, between 17,000 and 24,000 BC, the sea level was 100 to 120 meters lower than it is today. At that time, the coastline sat 700 to 1,000 kilometers north of its current position. The New Siberian Islands were actually hills within this vast plain. Over a period of about 7,000 years during the Early–Middle Holocene, the sea rose and submerged the plain. Today, the islands are the remaining parts of that 1.6 million square kilometer area.

Human discovery of the islands happened in stages over several centuries. The first news of the islands came from a Cossack named Yakov Permyakov in the early 18th century. In 1712, a Cossack unit led by M. Vagin reached Great Lyakhovsky Island. Later, in 1809 and 1810, Yakov Sannikov and Matvei Gedenschtrom conducted a cartographic expedition. Sannikov reported seeing a "new land" north of Kotelny Island in 1811. This report created the myth of Sannikov Land, a phantom territory that people searched for. In 1886, the scientist Eduard Toll visited the islands and believed he saw this unknown land. He returned in 1892, traveling by dog sled to reach the south coast of Great Lyakhovsky Island.

One of the most significant aspects of the islands is the presence of permafrost. Permafrost is ground that remains frozen for long periods. This frozen earth acts as a natural preservative for biological remains. Toll discovered well-preserved bones, ivory, peat, and wood within high sea cliffs. These sediments have accumulated periodically over the last 200,000 years. The islands contain massive accumulations of fossil ivory that are economically significant. This ivory comes from extinct megafauna like mammoths and rhinoceroses. The preservation is so excellent that the tusks often look like pure, modern ivory. Scientists use radiocarbon dating on bones and ivory to study these ancient animals.

The archipelago is also a vital location for modern biology and regional activity. BirdLife International has designated the entire area as an Important Bird Area. This status is due to the large breeding populations of birds that live there. In terms of human presence, the Russian Navy re-established a naval base on Kotelny Island in September 2014. This base had been abandoned since 1993. The islands serve as a bridge between the study of geology, paleontology, and modern Arctic geography. They show how shifting sea levels and changing climates can transform entire continents into islands.
