The physical landscape was shaped by massive geological forces. The Appalachian Mountains were created by the collision of the North American and African plates. During the Ice Age, glaciers covered the region. As these glaciers retreated about 18,000 years ago, they left behind features like Lake Passaic. They also created various rivers, meadows, swamps, and gorges. These natural features provided a foundation for the life that followed. The state's climate is also changing. Research shows it is the fastest-warming state in the U.S. over a 100-year period. This warming is linked to the North Atlantic Ocean.

Indigenous peoples have inhabited the land for a very long time. Paleo-Indians were present as early as 13,000 BC. By the early 17th century, the Lenape were the dominant group. The name "Lenape" is used for the land itself. The Lenape were divided into several autonomous groups. They also used matrilineal clans, which are groups based on common female ancestors. These clans used animal signs like the Turtle, Turkey, and Wolf. They practiced maize agriculture to supplement hunting and gathering. This helped them live near the Delaware and Hudson Rivers.

European colonization began in the early 1600s. Dutch and Swedish colonists established the first settlements. The Dutch colony of New Netherland included parts of modern New Jersey. The Dutch West India Company required colonists to purchase land. One such settlement was Pavonia, established by Michiel Pauw in 1630. This area eventually became Bergen, the state's first permanent municipality. In 1664, the British seized control of the region. They established the Province of New Jersey, named after the Channel Island of Jersey.
