There are about 6,000 types of these insects. This group includes lacewings and antlions. Most adults have four wings. These wings are the same size. They have many veins that look like a net. Most adults use their mouths to chew.

Young insects, called larvae, are hunters. They eat other small bugs. Some larvae hide in the sand. These are antlions. They dig pits to catch prey. Other larvae live in water. Some eat sponges. Some larvae make silk. They use this silk to make a cocoon. A cocoon is a hard shell for resting.

These insects are important because they help control pests. Some types eat aphids, which are small bugs that can hurt plants. Scientists have even looked into using them for biological control. Adult neuropterans have a specific body structure. They possess four membranous wings that are usually similar in size and shape. These wings feature a complex pattern of veins that look like a net. The history of Neuroptera stretches back millions of years. They first appeared during the Permian period. Fossils found in the Tunguska basin in Siberia and in Australia prove this.
