The river has three main parts. It starts deep in the Dinaric Alps. The water comes from five small springs. In the first part, the river makes deep canyons. It also makes wide, green valleys.

In the middle part, the river turns sharply. It flows through a very large canyon. The canyon walls are steep mountains. People built four large dams here. These dams make power for homes.

The Neretva is a very large and important river. It flows through the countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. Eventually, the river reaches the Adriatic Sea. The river is famous for its beautiful natural views and different landscapes. It is also a huge source of fresh water for people to drink. Many people use the river for electricity too. Four large power plants use big dams to make power. These dams also help protect the land from floods.

The river starts deep in the Dinaric Alps mountains. Its source is at 1,227 meters above sea level. The water actually begins as five small, separate springs. In this first section, the river creates deep, narrow canyons. It also flows through wide and fertile valleys. One part of this section is called the Upper Neretva. This part of the river has very pure water.

The middle part of the river begins near the town of Konjic. Here, the river makes a sudden, sharp turn. It flows into a very large and deep canyon. The canyon walls are made of steep mountains like Prenj and Čvrsnica. This area is known for its rugged and rocky ground. In 1953, a large dam was built near Jablanica. This dam created Jablaničko Lake, which is a popular place for vacations.

As the river continues, it reaches its third and final section. This area is sometimes called the "Bosnian and Herzegovinian California." The river spreads out into a wide area called a delta. A delta is where the river splits into many paths. This part of the river is in Croatia. It covers about 12,000 hectares of land. The river creates many wetlands here before it meets the sea.

Nature lovers can find many special places along the Neretva. The Hutovo Blato area is a famous nature park. It is a protected place for many different plants and animals. There is also a unique river called the Krupa nearby. The Krupa is special because it can flow in two directions. This happens when the Neretva pushes the water back. The Neretva remains a vital part of life for the whole region.

The Neretva is a major river in the eastern Adriatic basin. It flows through the countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. This river is the largest karst river in the Dinaric Alps. A karst landscape is a type of terrain made of porous rock. This rock allows water to move through it easily. The Neretva is a vital source of drinking water for the region. It is also a major source of electricity and flood protection. Four hydroelectric power plants use large dams to manage the water. These dams are all higher than 15 metres.

The river's journey can be divided into three distinct sections. The first section is called the Upper Neretva. The source is located deep in the Dinaric Alps. It sits at the base of the Zelengora and Lebršnik mountains. The water begins as five small, distinct wellsprings. This source is at an elevation of 1,227 meters above sea level. In this 90-kilometre stretch, the river cuts two narrow canyons. It also flows through two wide, fertile valleys. The water in this upper section has Class I purity.

The second section begins near the town of Konjic. The hydrography changed here due to human engineering. In 1953, a large gravitational dam was built near Jablanica. This dam created Jablaničko Lake, which is an irregular, elongated reservoir. The river takes a sharp 180-degree turn at this point. It then enters the third and largest canyon of its course. This canyon runs through the steep slopes of the Prenj, Čvrsnica, and Čabulja mountains. The canyon reaches depths of up to 800 metres. This section is defined by rugged karstic geology.

In this middle section, the river receives several small streams. These streams flow through massive, valley-sized rifts in the mountain walls. For example, the Glogošnica and Grabovica streams create their own canyons. The Drežanka stream also flows through a large, steep valley. On the left side, the Mostarska Bijela stream is a very pristine valley. This valley contains a unique subterranean stream deep in the Prenj mountain. Three large hydroelectric power stations operate here. These are the Grabovica, Salakovac, and Mostar power plants.

The third section occurs when the river expands for the final time. Some people call this area the "Bosnian and Herzegovinian California." The river eventually forms a wide alluvial delta. This delta is located in Croatia before the river meets the Adriatic Sea. The delta covers approximately 12,000 hectares of land. This area is a complex system of natural marshes and cultivated slots. The river splinters into multiple courses as it reaches the sea. The mouth of the river is near the port town of Ploče.

Nature is highly protected in the lower parts of the river. The Hutovo Blato area is a famous wetland and nature park. This area is part of a Ramsar site, which is an internationally important wetland. The Hutovo Blato Nature Park has been protected since 1995. It provides a vital habitat for many plants and animals. The Krupa River is a unique tributary in this region. The Krupa is one of the few rivers in Europe that can flow in two directions. This happens when high water levels in the Neretva push the Krupa's water backward.

The Neretva is more than just a body of water. It is a system that connects mountains, canyons, and the sea. The river's name may come from an Indo-European root meaning "to dive." This connects the river to ancient linguistic history. The river also carries significant cultural and historic heritage. It supports diverse ecosystems and many different types of flora and fauna. From the high mountain springs to the coastal delta, the Neretva shapes the entire landscape of the region.
