For example, antidiuretic hormone regulates water reabsorption. Aldosterone and atrial natriuretic peptide both affect sodium levels. Parathyroid hormone manages calcium and phosphate. This chemical signaling ensures that the body retains exactly what it needs. Without these precise adjustments, the body could not manage its internal chemistry effectively.
Every day, over 150 liters of fluid enter the glomeruli of an adult. Despite this massive volume, the nephrons are incredibly efficient at recycling resources. Approximately 99% of the water in the initial filtrate is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. This occurs through the epithelial cells of the tubule and adjacent peritubular capillaries. The peritubular capillaries surround the tubules to collect these returned substances. Ultimately, the remaining fluid contains metabolic waste and toxins. This final product, urine, is then sent out of the kidney to be removed from the body.
