Ned, his brother Dan, and two associates named Joe Byrne and Steve Hart became outlaws. The government of Victoria officially proclaimed them outlaws, meaning they were hunted by the law. 

In 1880, the gang attempted to derail a police train. This was part of a plan to attack Benalla, a major police base. 
Despite many people asking for his life to be spared, Ned Kelly was convicted of murder. He was executed at the Melbourne Gaol in 1880.
