During this time, the Nazi Party held total control over the country. They transformed Germany into a totalitarian dictatorship. This means the government held all power and controlled almost every part of life. The Nazis called their state the Third Reich. This term claimed they were the successors to the Holy Roman Empire and the German Empire. They even called it the Thousand-Year Reich to suggest it would last forever.

The Nazi rise to power began after severe economic problems in Germany. Following World War I, Germany faced massive debts and reparations payments. The government printed money to pay these debts, which caused hyperinflation. This led to unstable prices and food riots. When the United States stock market crashed in 1929, the German economy collapsed further. Millions of people lost their jobs and banks failed. The Nazi Party promised to fix the economy and provide jobs. In the 1932 elections, the party became the largest group in the Reichstag, holding 230 seats.

Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933.

Shortly after, the Reichstag building was set on fire. Hitler used this event to pass the Reichstag Fire Decree. This decree took away civil liberties like freedom of the press. He then used the Enabling Act to pass laws without the consent of the Reichstag. This act provided the legal foundation for his dictatorship. By 1934, Hitler was the sole leader, known as the Führer. He merged the offices of President and Chancellor into one position. The government became a one-party state where all other political parties were banned.

To gain popularity, the Nazis used deficit spending to boost the economy. They funded massive public works projects, such as the Autobahnen motorways. They also started a secret rearmament programme to build the Wehrmacht, or armed forces. These actions helped end mass unemployment and increased average wages. However, the regime also used the Propaganda Ministry to control public thought. They used films, mass rallies, and antisemitic messages to influence people. They created a cult of personality around Hitler to make him seem essential. The government even controlled art and education to promote Nazi ideology.

Nazi ideology was built on extreme racism and antisemitism. They believed Germanic peoples were the "master race" within the Aryan race. They used pseudo-scientific ideas to categorize people.

This ideology led to the persecution of many groups. They targeted Jews, Romani people, Slavs, and homosexuals. They also targeted political opponents like communists and socialists. Many of these people were imprisoned, deported, or murdered. This system of mass murder is known as the Holocaust. In Eastern Europe, the Nazis implemented the Generalplan Ost and the Hunger Plan to control and exploit populations.

In 1938, Germany seized Austria during the Anschluss. In 1939, Germany invaded Poland, which started World War II in Europe.

The Nazis formed an alliance with Fascist Italy and other Axis powers. By 1940, they had conquered much of Europe. However, they failed to defeat Britain. After invading the Soviet Union in 1941, the tide began to turn. The Soviet Union and the United States entered the war against Germany. By 1943, Germany lost its military initiative. Large-scale aerial bombing of German cities increased as the Allies pushed forward.

The war ended in May 1945 when Germany surrendered. The Soviet Union conquered Germany from the east. The other Allied powers moved in from the west. Hitler's refusal to admit defeat early on caused massive destruction to German infrastructure. After the surrender, the Allies began a process called denazification. They sought to remove Nazi influence from German life. Many leaders of the Nazi regime were put on trial for war crimes. These were known as the Nuremberg trials. This period remains a central study in how totalitarian systems function and the consequences of racial hatred.
