Nayarit is a sovereign state within the Federal Entities of Mexico.
The geography of Nayarit is defined by its varied terrain. The western portion is dominated by the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. These mountains create a broken and rugged landscape. The state contains two active volcanoes named Ceboruco and Sangangüey.
Vegetation in Nayarit changes based on the altitude of the land. Coastal lowlands and river valleys were historically covered by tropical dry forests. These forests contain many deciduous trees that shed leaves during dry seasons. The Marismas Nacionales–San Blas mangroves form a large network along the northern coast. These tidal mangrove forests support many resident and migratory waterbirds. In the higher mountains, the environment shifts to pine–oak forests. At the highest elevations, you will find dense forests of conifers. The Sierra also contains hundreds of miles of lush rainforest.
The history of the region involves many different cultures. Radiocarbon dating suggests Aztatlán colonization occurred as early as 520 AD.
During the colonial period, the port of San Blas was vital. It served as one of the most important trade ports on the Pacific coast. Galleons from Manila, Philippines, arrived here before Acapulco rose to prominence. Today, the town still contains colonial architecture like the aduana. The struggle for Mexican independence also involved this state. The priest José María Mercado initiated the movement here. Later, Nayarit was part of Jalisco in the 1824 constitution. It finally became a state of the Mexican federation on 1 May 1917.
The economy of Nayarit relies on several key industries. Agriculture is the primary economic driver for the state. Farmers grow crops like maize, coffee, mangoes, and avocados. The volcanic soil of the Sierra Madre Occidental produces high-quality Arabica coffee. This coffee is exported globally through cooperatives.

Nayarit is home to a diverse array of wildlife. The state contains 119 registered species of mammals. You might find white-tailed deer, coyotes, or various types of armadillos. Wild felines like the puma and the ocelot also live here.
