The building has three main floors for different types of art. The ground floor has parks, gardens, and waterfalls. You can also see stone towers called pagodas and large bells there. The first floor has galleries for ancient history and medieval times. The second floor holds beautiful paintings and calligraphy, which is special handwriting. The history of the museum started a long time ago. Emperor Sunjong created the first museum in 1909. It was called the Imperial Household Museum. After South Korea became independent in 1945, the National Museum was officially established. During the Korean War, people had to move 20,000 pieces to Busan to keep them safe. The museum moved to many different places over the years. In 2005, it finally opened its current home in Yongsan Family Park.

The museum is organized into three distinct floors. Symbolically, the left side of the museum represents the past. The right side represents the future. The ground floor features outdoor elements like parks, gardens, and waterfalls. Visitors can see pagodas, stupas, lanterns, and steles on this level. One notable item is the Great Bell of Bosingak, a National Treasure of Korea. The first floor contains the Prehistory and Ancient History Gallery. This gallery houses 4,500 artifacts from the Paleolithic to the Unified Silla era.

The first floor also includes the Medieval and Early Modern History Gallery. This section showcases heritage from the Unified Silla, Balhae, Goryeo, and Joseon periods. On the second floor, visitors find the Donation Gallery and the Calligraphy and Painting Gallery. The Calligraphy and Painting Gallery holds 890 pieces of art. It includes rooms for painting, calligraphy, Buddhist paintings, and the Sarangbang, or scholar's studio. The Donation Gallery contains 800 pieces from private collectors. These are organized into eleven different rooms named after the collectors.

The third floor holds the Sculpture and Crafts Gallery and the Asian Arts Gallery. The Sculpture and Crafts Gallery features 630 pieces of Buddhist sculpture and craftwork. Notable items include Goryeo celadon and the Bangasayusang, or Pensive Bodhisattva. The Asian Arts Gallery contains 970 pieces. These items explore the connections between Asian and Western art via the Silk Road.

Many specific treasures offer deep insight into Korean culture. The Silla gold crown from the fifth century shows social class. The Pensive Bodhisattva statue shows elegant Baekje craftsmanship.
