As emperor, he continues to participate in many significant public events. He served as an honorary president for the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo. He also supports the World Organization of the Scout Movement. 
Naruhito also uses modern tools to connect with the public. In April 2024, the Imperial Household Agency launched an Instagram account. This was done to reach out to the younger generations in Japan. The account gained 300,000 followers by the end of its debut. He also uses his position to offer support during national crises. For instance, he sent messages of mourning following the Noto earthquake. He and the Empress later visited earthquake-stricken areas like Wajima and Suzu.
