The Napoleonic Wars were a series of huge conflicts.

Napoleon was a very clever general. He used new ways to win battles. He often used large groups of soldiers. He also used big guns called artillery. He used these guns to break enemy lines.
These wars happened in many stages. The first big fight began in 1803. This happened when Britain declared war on France. In 1805, a group called the Third Coalition formed. This group included Austria and Russia. Napoleon defeated them at Ulm and Austerlitz. Later, Prussia joined the fight in 1806. This was the Fourth Coalition. Napoleon won many battles during this time. He won at Jena-Auerstedt and Friedland. These victories brought a short peace in 1807.
Napoleon tried to control trade with the Continental System. This plan was meant to hurt Britain. To do this, he invaded Portugal in 1807. He also took over Spain in 1808. He even put his brother, Joseph I, on the throne. This caused the Peninsular War in Spain. In 1812, Napoleon made a huge mistake. He launched a massive invasion of Russia. It was a very hard time for his army. The French had to retreat in December 1812.
Other countries saw Napoleon was weak. They formed a Sixth Coalition to fight him. They defeated him at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813.

The Napoleonic Wars were a massive series of global conflicts from 1803 to 1815.

Napoleon used specific military tactics to win his many battles. He focused on maneuver and deception to trap his enemies. He would move his troops to force an opponent into a bad position. Once the enemy committed their main forces, Napoleon launched a surprise attack. He often used an enveloping attack on the enemy's flank or rear. This tactic could destroy the morale of the opposing army. After 1807, he also used a highly mobile artillery force. Artillery refers to large, mounted guns used in combat. He used massed artillery as a spearhead to break enemy lines. After the line broke, he sent in his infantry and cavalry.
The wars progressed through several major stages and coalitions. The first stage began in May 1803 when Britain declared war. In April 1805, the Third Coalition formed with Austria and Russia. Napoleon defeated these armies at Ulm and Austerlitz. This victory led to the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1806, Prussia joined Britain and Russia in the Fourth Coalition. Napoleon won decisive victories at Jena-Auerstedt and Friedland. By July 1807, an uneasy peace was reached on the continent. However, Britain remained France's primary major enemy throughout this period.
Napoleon later tried to use economic warfare through the Continental System. This system was designed to isolate and weaken Britain financially. To enforce this, he invaded Portugal in 1807. He also turned against Spain in 1808. Napoleon deposed the Spanish royal family and installed his brother, Joseph I. This move angered the Spanish people and started the Peninsular War. This conflict forced French troops away from other fronts. It also allowed Austria to rejoin the fight in the Fifth Coalition. Although Austria won at Aspern-Essling, they were defeated at Wagram in 1809.
A major turning point occurred with the invasion of Russia in 1812. Russia had been violating the Continental System to maintain its trade. Napoleon launched a massive invasion in June of that year. The campaign was extremely costly for both the French and the Russians. By December 1812, the French forces were forced to retreat. This retreat resulted in the near-destruction of Napoleon's army. This failure encouraged other nations to unite against him. Austria, Prussia, Russia, Britain, and Spain formed the Sixth Coalition. They eventually defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813.
The final collapse of Napoleon's rule happened in several steps. In 1814, coalition troops invaded France from both the east and west. They captured Paris at the end of March. This forced Napoleon to abdicate his throne in April 1814. He was exiled to the island of Elba. However, he escaped in February 1815 and returned to power. This brief period is known as the Hundred Days. The Seventh Coalition was formed to stop his return. They decisively defeated him at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.
The significance of these wars reaches far into modern history. They introduced new methods of fighting, such as mass conscription. Conscription is the practice of drafting citizens into military service. They also saw the rise of guerrilla warfare. Politically, the wars spread the Napoleonic Code across Europe. This code was a set of civil laws that many places kept. The wars also spread the ideas of nationalism and liberalism. In Spanish America, independence movements emerged because of these conflicts. This led to the decline of the Spanish and Portuguese Empires.
Ultimately, the wars reshaped the global balance of power. France's defeat allowed Britain to become the leading naval and economic power. Britain held this status for the rest of the 19th century. After the wars, the Congress of Vienna redrew the borders of Europe. This meeting aimed to bring stability to the continent. It resulted in a period of relative peace between great powers. This peace lasted until the Crimean War began in 1853. The Napoleonic era remains a central study of how conflict changes nations.
