He spent much of his youth at a lakeside house in Arenenberg. During this time, he studied history and radical politics with his tutor, Philippe Le Bas.

As a young man, Napoleon III became a leader of the Bonapartist movement. This movement wanted to return a member of his family to the throne. He spent years in exile and wrote several books about his political ideas. One of his main goals was to find a middle ground between a republic and a monarchy. He believed in the principle of popular sovereignty. This means he thought a strong leader should execute the will of the people. He wanted a regime that was strong but not a despotism. He also believed in universal suffrage, which is the right of all adults to vote.

Napoleon III's rise to power happened in stages. In 1848, he was elected president of the French Second Republic. He won a huge victory in the first direct popular vote in France. He captured 74.2 percent of the votes cast. However, he could not be re-elected constitutionally. In 1851, he seized power by force to stay in control. In 1852, he officially founded the Second French Empire. This period led to rapid industrialization across France. It also saw a massive expansion of the nation's infrastructure.

During his reign, he worked to modernize the entire country. He commissioned Georges-Eugène Haussmann to lead a grand reconstruction of Paris. This project changed the look of the city forever. He also expanded the national railway system and modernized the banking system. In agriculture, he helped establish modern methods. These changes ended famines in France and turned the country into an agricultural exporter. He even helped promote the building of the Suez Canal in Egypt.

Napoleon III also passed important social reforms. He gave workers the right to organize and the right to strike. He also helped women gain the right to attend universities. In foreign policy, he tried to increase French influence globally. He allied with Britain to defeat Russia in the Crimean War. He also helped with the unification of Italy. His empire grew significantly in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. However, his attempt to create a second empire in Mexico ended in total failure.

His reign ended because of a conflict with Prussia. A leader named Otto von Bismarck was working to unify Germany. In July 1870, Napoleon III declared war on Prussia due to public pressure. The French Army was defeated very quickly. At the Battle of Sedan, Napoleon III was captured by Prussian forces.
