Nancy eventually became the seat for the Duchy of Lorraine. This status lasted until 1766. At that time, King Louis XV of France annexed the duchy. Nancy then became a provincial capital.

Different leaders shaped the city's architecture through many stages. In the 15th century, Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy was killed nearby. This happened at the Battle of Nancy in 1477. Following this, René II became the ruler of Lorraine. A major change occurred in the 18th century due to royal marriages. Emperor Charles arranged for Maria Theresa of Austria to marry Duke François of Lorraine. Because the Emperor had no male heir, the throne went to Maria Theresa. This led to the exiled Polish king, Stanislaus I, receiving the duchy in 1736.
