Today, Nancy Drew is much more than just a character in books.
Nancy Drew is a famous fictional amateur sleuth who appears in many different media formats.

Edward Stratemeyer created the character in 1930 through his firm, the Stratemeyer Syndicate. He wanted a female counterpart to his successful Hardy Boys series. He originally suggested names like Stella Strong or Diana Drew for the heroine. Publishers eventually chose the name Nancy Drew. Stratemeyer provided the plot outlines for the stories. However, he hired ghostwriters to do the actual writing. One of the most significant writers was Mildred Wirt Benson. She is credited with giving Nancy a feisty and independent spirit.
Nancy Drew has undergone many changes to reflect shifting American culture and tastes. In the original 1930s versions, she was a 16-year-old high school graduate with blonde hair and blue eyes. In later editions, she was rewritten as an 18-year-old with titian, or reddish, hair. The stories also changed how she handled mysteries. In 1959, the books were extensively revised and shortened to lower printing costs. These revisions made Nancy less unruly and less violent than her original version. By the 1980s, a series called The Nancy Drew Files introduced a more professional Nancy with romantic subplots.
Nancy lives in the fictional town of River Heights with her father, Carson Drew. Carson is a successful attorney who often travels for business. This leaves Nancy to manage much of her own life. She lives with their housekeeper, Hannah Gruen. In early books, Hannah was described as a servant. In later versions, she is seen as a surrogate parent to Nancy. Nancy's independence is also linked to the loss of her mother. In early stories, she lost her mother at age ten. In later versions, the loss happened when she was only three.
Nancy is often joined by a loyal group of friends and companions. Her closest friends are her cousins, Bess Marvin and George Fayne. Bess is described as delicate and feminine. In contrast, George is a tomboy. These two characters provide a balance to Nancy's personality. She also has a boyfriend named Ned Nickerson, who is a student at Emerson College.
The Nancy Drew franchise has expanded into many different types of entertainment. As of April 2020, there have been six feature films and three television series. There have also been four television pilots and two comic-book series. The character is particularly successful in the world of digital gaming. There are 34 video games produced by the brand HeR Interactive. These games have often received high praise from players.
The character's massive scale is reflected in her sales and linguistic reach. At least 80 million copies of the books have been sold worldwide. Furthermore, the stories have been translated into over 45 different languages. This widespread presence has led many critics to study her significance. Some feminist critics view her as a mythic heroine or an expression of wish fulfillment. Others see her as a way to explore complicated ideas about femininity. Despite the many changes to her hair or age, her core values remain the same. She continues to be a symbol of power and intelligence for readers everywhere.
