It covers much of the central area of modern-day Saudi Arabia. The name Najd comes from the Arabic word for "highland." This describes the elevated nature of the terrain. The region does not have fixed, precise boundaries. Its edges shift depending on different geographical and political definitions used throughout history. To the west, it is bordered by the Hejaz region. To the north, the Nafud desert sits in al-Jawf. The ad-Dahna Desert lies to the east. To the south, the region meets the Rub' al-Khali.

During the 5th century AD, the Kingdom of Kinda was established in central Arabia. The Ḥimyarites of Sheba helped create this vassal state to control trade routes.

The first king of Kindah was Ḥujr 'Akīl al-Murār ibn 'Amr. The Kindite kings ruled through personal prestige rather than settled, coercive authority. Their first capital was Qaryat Dhāt Kāhil, which is known today as Qaryat al-Fāw. The Kindites attempted to unite the tribes of Central Arabia through alliances. They fought many wars, including conflicts with the Lakhmids. However, the kingdom eventually split into four groups: the Asad, Taghlib, Qays, and Kinānah. By 540 AD, the Lakhmids destroyed the Kindite settlements. This forced most Kindites to move to Yemen.

In the 7th century, Najd became a site for significant Islamic history. Muhammad led several military expeditions into the region. In 624 AD, a raid took place against the Quraysh caravan. This raid captured booty worth 100,000 dirhams. In 625 AD, an invasion of Najd occurred to deter suspicious tribes. Another expedition, known as the Expedition of Qatan, targeted the Banu Asad ibn Khuzaymah tribe. This tribe lived near the hill of Katan in the vicinity of Fayd. These early military movements helped establish influence over the various tribes living in the central highlands.

After the death of Muhammad, the region experienced the Ridda wars. These were conflicts involving tribes that wished to leave Islamic control. Several leaders, such as Musaylima and Tulayha, claimed prophethood to lead rebellions. The caliph Abu Bakr sent the general Khalid ibn al-Walid to restore authority.

Khalid achieved major victories at the Battle of Buzakha in September 632. He also defeated tribes at the Battle of Ghamra and the Battle of Naqra. In October 632, his army grew to 6,000 strong. Khalid then moved against the Banu Tamim tribe. This tribe was led by Malik ibn Nuwayrah, a famous poet and warrior. These wars were essential in the unification of the Arabian Peninsula.

Today, Najd remains a vital part of the Saudi Arabian state. It is home to approximately one-third of the country's modern population. The region is also the ancestral home of the House of Saud. This family used Najd as a base to pursue unification with the Hejaz. This process began during the era of the Emirate of Diriyah.
