Later, the zoologist Johan Christian Fabricius established the Myrmecia genus in 1804. Many scientists have worked to name the different types. For example, Frederick Smith placed them in different families in 1858.

Other experts like Carlo Emery and William Morton Wheeler also studied them. In 2015, Robert Taylor described four new species in Australia.

There are many facts about the numbers and types of Myrmecia. Scientists have described 94 different species so far. They think there might be as many as 130 species in total.

Another group is the M. pilosula species group, called jack jumper ants. These ants are usually small and vary in color.

There are also the M. mandibularis group, which are toothless bull ants. They have oddly shaped mandibles and black bodies.

One of the most amazing things about these ants is their genetics. The number of chromosomes can vary greatly between species. Some species, like M. pilosula, have only a single pair of chromosomes. This is the lowest number possible for any animal.

Other species have much higher counts, such as M. pyriformis with 41 chromosomes.

Their venom is also very significant. It is among the most toxic venom in the insect world. In Tasmania, 3% of the human population is allergic to the venom of M. pilosula.

Despite their dangerous stings, Myrmecia ants are part of a complex ecosystem. Very few predators choose to eat them because of their potent venom. However, their larvae are often eaten by echidnas and blindsnakes. Some species of these ants even act as effective pollinators. This shows how they connect to many different parts of nature. They are a unique and primitive group that has existed for a very long time. Genetic evidence suggests they diverged from related groups about 100 million years ago.
