Because the rivers follow very winding courses, they create several long and narrow peninsulas. The main part of the city sits at a 180-degree bend in the Southern Bug. This location makes Mykolaiv a vital transportation hub for the region.

The city is a major center for the shipbuilding industry. It contains three primary shipyards: Black Sea, 61 Kommunara, and Okean.

Beyond construction, the city hosts specialized research centers. These include the State Research and Design Shipbuilding Center and Zoria-Mashproekt. Mykolaiv also manages a sea port, a commercial port, and a river port. It connects to the Black Sea and features important highway and railway junctions. An airport also serves the area, helping to move people and goods.

The geography of the region is primarily flat. Mykolaiv sits within the fertile steppe, which is a large area known for producing grain.

There are no mountain barriers to the north of the city. This means cold Arctic winds can blow south toward Mykolaiv during the winter. The nearest mountains are located to the south at the end of the Crimean Peninsula. This open terrain has shaped the local climate and the agricultural importance of the surrounding land.

History shows that many different groups have occupied this land. Archaeologists found evidence of ancient settlements in the area. In 2018, researchers discovered a sunken Ancient Greek ship near the Mykolaiv region. This vessel dates back to the fifth century BC. This was during the period of Greek colonization in the Northern Black Sea. Over time, the area was inhabited by Scythians, Slavic tribes, and Zaporozhian Cossacks. The intensive settlement of the Mykolaiv peninsula began in the late 18th century.

Prince Grigory Potemkin founded the city during the Second Russo-Turkish War. He established the city as Nikolaev in 1789.

Potemkin chose a high, cool, and breezy spot near the mouth of the Ingul River. He named the city after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers. This name choice followed a victory obtained on Saint Nicholas' day. To build the city, Potemkin brought in soldiers, peasants, and Turkish prisoners. By 1789, approximately 2,500 people were working on the site. The shipyards were constructed even earlier, in 1788.

In the 19th century, Mykolaiv became a major industrial and cultural center. The city's port ranked third in the Russian Empire for foreign trade. It was behind only Saint Petersburg and Odesa. The city also became a significant Jewish center. In 1926, the Jewish community made up about 20.8 percent of the total population. Mykolaiv has also been recognized by space scientists. In 1982, an asteroid named 8141 Nikolaev was discovered.

Russian attacks caused damage to many houses and high-rise buildings. In April 2022, a strike on the main waterline cut off the centralized water supply. For nearly a month, residents had to get water from local rivers. A new water pipeline was eventually completed, and freshwater supply resumed in October 2025. Because of its resilience, Mykolaiv holds the honorary title of Hero City of Ukraine.
