The ponies also use special items called the Elements of Harmony. These artifacts represent different parts of friendship. The ponies use their unique skills to protect their world from scary threats like dragons or hydras.

Animator Lauren Faust led the creation of the show. She wanted to make something special for her own childhood imagination. Faust did not want the show to be just about tea parties. She wanted the characters to have deep and real personalities.

She designed the ponies to be relatable to many people. She even used ideas from shows her brothers liked, such as Transformers. This helped make the world feel like a place for real adventure. Faust worked hard to build a universe that felt huge and exciting.

Making the show took a lot of careful work. It started with a plan called a pitch bible.

This book helped the creators show their ideas to Hasbro. The creators used many styles for the art. They looked at German cottages and European castles for inspiration. Ponyville was based on small German cottages. Canterlot was designed to look like a royal castle on a mountain. The show was produced by Allspark Animation and DHX Media Vancouver.

The series aired on The Hub from October 10, 2010, to October 12, 2019. It became one of the most popular shows on that network. Even though it was made for young girls, many adults loved it too. These adult fans are called "bronies." The show was so successful that it led to a movie in 2017. There was also a spin-off called Equestria Girls. Later, a comedy series called Pony Life began in 2020. The franchise is still growing today.

The story takes place in Equestria, a land inhabited by three distinct subspecies of ponies. These groups are often described as tribes or races: earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns. Each group has unique characteristics and cultural roles within the kingdom. Earth ponies live on the ground and are often depicted as diligent workers. Pegasi live in the clouds and possess the ability to control the weather. Unicorns typically reside in mountain settings and utilize magic.

The ponies also utilize powerful magical artifacts known as the Elements of Harmony. These artifacts represent different facets of friendship and allow the characters to defeat various threats.

To build this world, creator Lauren Faust developed a detailed "pitch bible." This document served as a foundational guide for the show's universe. Faust drew inspiration from her own childhood imagination and various artistic styles. She utilized Pennsylvania Dutch design, steampunk fantasy art, and European fairy tales. The setting of Ponyville was modeled after German cottages to create a fairy-tale atmosphere. In contrast, the city of Canterlot was designed with a European feel. It features castles and cathedrals located on a mountain to convey a sense of royalty.

Faust's approach to characterization was a significant departure from previous iterations of the franchise. She aimed to move away from stereotypes that portrayed girls' programming as merely "cutesy" or superficial. Instead, she implemented deeper characterization and complex fantasy worldbuilding. The characters were designed with diverse and relatable personalities to broaden their appeal. For example, Applejack is a diligent earth pony, while Rainbow Dash is a sporty pegasus. Fluttershy is a timid pegasus, and Pinkie Pie is an energetic earth pony. Rarity is a glamorous unicorn, and Twilight Sparkle is a socially naïve unicorn who eventually becomes an alicorn.

The production process involved collaboration between many talented professionals. Faust worked with colleagues like Martin Ansolabehere and Paul Rudish to develop the series. Paul Rudish specifically inspired elements like the villain Nightmare Moon and the weather-controlling abilities of pegasi. The animation was handled by DHX Media Vancouver, formerly known as Studio B Productions. The series also featured a dedicated musical score composed by William Anderson.

While Faust served as the initial showrunner, she stepped down after the second season. This transition occurred due to hectic production schedules and a desire for more creative control. Following her departure, other staff members, including Jayson Thiessen, took over leadership roles.

Since its debut, the franchise has seen immense commercial and cultural success. The series aired on The Hub from October 10, 2010, to October 12, 2019. It became one of the highest-rated productions in the history of that network. Although the primary target demographic was young girls, the show attracted a large following of adult men known as "bronies." This unexpected popularity provided Hasbro with significant new merchandising opportunities. The success of the television show eventually led to a feature-length film in October 2017.

The My Little Pony brand has expanded into several different media formats and spin-offs. In 2013, the franchise launched a spin-off titled My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, which ran for six years. A comedy series called My Little Pony: Pony Life premiered in November 2020. Furthermore, a live-action adaptation by Amazon MGM Studios and Hasbro Entertainment was announced in July 2025. These various iterations demonstrate how a single animated concept can evolve into a massive, multi-generational entertainment system.
