To protect their soft tissues, mussels use internal anterior and posterior adductor muscles to pull the valves shut. This closure also prevents desiccation, which is the process of drying out. The shell itself is composed of three distinct layers. The outermost layer is the periostracum, a pigmented protein layer called conchin that protects against acid and abrasion. How a mussel stays in place depends on whether it lives in the sea or a river. Marine mussels are often sessile, meaning they stay in one place. They use a specialized organ to produce byssal threads, often called a "beard." These threads are exuded from a byssus pit and harden upon contact with seawater. These threads are incredibly tough, strong, and elastic, allowing mussels to cling to rocks in high-flow areas. They can even use these threads to tether predatory molluscs, such as dog whelks, to immobilize them. In contrast, freshwater mussels have a large, muscular, hatchet-shaped foot. They use this foot to pull themselves through substrates like sand, gravel, or silt. They expand the end of the foot to act as an anchor before pulling their shell forward.

Both types of mussels feed using a process called filter feeding. They draw water into their bodies through an incurrent siphon. Once inside, tiny hair-like structures called cilia move the water into a branchial chamber. These cilia help transport microscopic organisms and plankton toward the mouth. The labial palps then funnel this food into the mouth for digestion. After the nutrients are extracted, the wastewater is expelled through an excurrent siphon. This continuous flow of water is essential for their survival and growth.

Reproduction strategies vary significantly between these groups. Marine mussels are gonochoristic, meaning they have separate male and female individuals. Fertilization happens outside the body in the water. The resulting larvae drift in the ocean for three weeks to six months before settling on a hard surface. Freshwater mussels also reproduce sexually, but the process is more complex. A male releases sperm into the water, which enters the female through her incurrent siphon. The eggs develop into a larval stage called a glochidium. These glochidia act as temporary parasites by attaching to the fins or gills of a host fish. They stay protected within a cyst on the fish for two to five weeks before dropping to the bottom to live independently.

Humans harvest mussels on a massive global scale for food and pearls. In 2005, China accounted for 40% of the global mussel catch, totaling 0.77 million tonnes. In the United States, Washington state harvested approximately 2.9 million pounds of mussels in 2010, valued at $4.3 million. In New Zealand, the green-lipped mussel industry produces over 140,000 metric tons annually. This industry was valued at more than NZ$250 million in 2009. Beyond food, some freshwater mussels are specifically used to cultivate freshwater pearls.

To meet this demand, many mussels are raised through aquaculture. Farmers use several different methods to grow these animals. In Bouchot culture, wooden pilings are planted in the intertidal zone, and ropes are wrapped around them. Raft culture involves suspending mesh socks filled with mussels from large floating rafts. Another method is longline culture, where mussels are attached to ropes supported by plastic floats. This is common in New Zealand to handle high wave energy. Regardless of the method, mussels grow quickly and are often ready for harvest in less than two years.
