Notes also exist in different octaves, which are groups of pitches that sound very similar. Two pitches are an octave apart if their frequencies exist in a ratio equal to a power of two. This means the top note of an octave has double the frequency of the bottom note. Middle C is a common reference point for these relationships. It sits between the treble and bass staves and has a frequency of approximately 261.626 Hz. In the standard A440 tuning, the A above Middle C is exactly 440 Hz. 
To organize these various octaves, musicians use different notation systems. Scientific pitch notation uses a letter followed by an Arabic numeral, such as C4 for Middle C. Helmholtz notation uses letter case and prime symbols, such as c' for Middle C. Electronic instruments often use the MIDI standard, which assigns a number to every pitch. In MIDI, the lowest supported note is 0 and the highest is 127. These systems, ranging from ancient Byzantine names to modern digital numbers, all help us organize the vast world of sound.
