We do not know everything about how murids evolved. Very few fossils have survived to tell the story. They probably evolved from hamster-like animals in tropical Asia. This likely happened during the early Miocene epoch. Since then, they have produced species that survive in cooler climates. They became common worldwide by hitching a ride with human migrations. Murids also appear frequently in human culture and literature.
