Britain and France wanted to keep peace. They did not want a big war in Europe. They asked Czechoslovakia to give the land to Germany.

Leaders from Germany, France, Britain, and Italy signed the deal. Czechoslovakia was not part of the meeting. They had to give up the land. This land was very important for their defense. It had strong walls and forts.

Many people thought the deal would work. But it did not stop the trouble. In 1939, Hitler took the rest of the country. This proved the deal failed to keep peace.
