Muhammad II was the Shah of the Khwarazmian Empire. A Shah is a ruler or king. He ruled from the year 1200 to 1221.
Muhammad fought many wars to grow his land. He took over many areas. He even made his own gold coins.
In 1218, a leader named Genghis Khan sent a group of traders. They wanted to start a trade road. Muhammad did not trust them. He and his men killed the traders. This was a very big mistake. Genghis Khan sent a huge army to fight back. The Mongol army attacked many cities.
Muhammad had to flee from the fighting. He went to an island in the Caspian Sea. He died there in 1221. His son, Jalal al-Din, became the next ruler.
Muhammad II was a powerful ruler known as a Shah. He led the Khwarazmian Empire for about twenty-one years. His reign began on August 3, 1200. He took the throne after his father, Tekish, died. Muhammad came from a family of leaders in Central Asia. His ancestor was a man named Anushtegin Gharchai. Anushtegin had once been a leader in a small province called Khwarazm.
Muhammad spent much of his time fighting to grow his lands. At first, he faced trouble from the Ghurid brothers. These leaders were named Ghiyath al-Din Ghori and Mu'izz al-Din. Muhammad fought them for many years. He once tried to take the city of Herat. Later, he captured many other places like Samarkand and Tabaristan. He even took control of the land known as Transoxiana. By the year 1217, his empire reached from the Jaxartes river to the Persian Gulf.
Growing an empire was a very hard job for Muhammad. He had to deal with many different groups of people. In 1212, the city of Samarkand revolted against him. This led to a very sad event where many people died. In another struggle, Muhammad tried to march toward Baghdad. He wanted to replace the caliph, an-Nasir, as the top leader. However, a terrible blizzard hit his army in the Zagros Mountains. Thousands of his soldiers died in the cold snow.
In 1218, a new danger arrived from the east. A leader named Genghis Khan wanted to start trade with Muhammad. He sent a group of merchants to show they wanted peace. One report says there were 100 merchants with one Mongol leader. Another report says there were 450 people in the group. Muhammad did not believe they were just traders. He believed they were spies. His governor, Inalchuq, seized their goods and killed the group. Muhammad also killed the messengers Genghis Khan sent to fix the problem.
This choice led to a massive war with the Mongols. Genghis Khan sent an army of 100,000 to 150,000 men in 1219. They attacked many cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Otrar. The Mongol invasion destroyed the Khwarazmian Empire. Muhammad had to flee from the fighting to find safety. He went to an island in the Caspian Sea near Abaskun. He died there of an illness in January 1221. His son, Jalal al-Din Mangburni, became the next ruler.
Ala ad-Dunya wa ad-Din Abul-Fath Muhammad Sanjar ibn Tekish was a powerful Shah. He ruled the Khwarazmian Empire from August 3, 1200, until January 11, 1221. The Khwarazmian Empire was a large state in Central Asia. Muhammad came from the Anushtegin dynasty. His ancestor, Anushtegin Gharchai, was a Turkic Ghulam. A Ghulam was a person who served in a military or administrative role. Anushtegin eventually became a viceroy of the Khwarazm province.
Muhammad's reign began with immediate conflict. After his father Tekish died, the Ghurid brothers invaded his lands. These brothers were Ghiyath al-Din Ghori and Mu'izz al-Din. They moved their armies west into Khorasan. They captured the city of Nishapur. Mu'izz al-Din later led an expedition toward Ray. However, he lost control of his troops near Gurgan. This caused a quarrel between the two brothers. In 1203, Ghiyath al-Din died after a long illness. Muhammad used this time to attack the Ghurid Empire. He besieged the city of Herat. Mu'izz al-Din fought back and besieged Muhammad's capital, Gurganj. Muhammad requested help from the Kara-Khitan Khanate. Their army helped him, forcing Mu'izz al-Din to retreat.
Political shifts continued as the Ghurid Empire fell into civil war. Mu'izz al-Din was assassinated in 1206. Ghiyath al-Din Mahmud eventually won the civil war. A Turkic general named Taj al-Din Yildiz seized the city of Ghazni. Ghiyath requested help from Muhammad to handle this situation. Instead of helping, Muhammad invaded Ghurid lands. He captured the cities of Balkh and Tirmidh. Muhammad was briefly captured by the Kara-Khitan Khanate. He was freed thirteen months later. He then captured Herat and the Ghurid heartland. Ghiyath eventually agreed to recognize Muhammad's authority.
Muhammad followed an expansionist policy to grow his empire. This means he actively sought to take more territory. In 1207, he took Samarkand from the Kara Khitay. In 1210, he took Tabaristan from the Bavandids. He also took Transoxiana from the Western Karakhanids. He later conquered Tashkent and Fergana. By 1211, the Atabegs of Azerbaijan became his vassals. A vassal is a person or state that owes loyalty to a stronger ruler. He destroyed the Western Karakhanids in 1212. He also destroyed the Ghurids in 1215.
His rule involved significant violence and massive numbers. In 1212, the city of Samarkand revolted. This revolt killed between 8,000 and 10,000 Khwarazmians. Muhammad responded by sacking the city. This resulted in the execution of 10,000 citizens. By 1217, his empire stretched from the Jaxartes river to the Persian Gulf. Muhammad demanded formal recognition as Shah from the caliph in Baghdad. The caliph, an-Nasir, refused his claim. Muhammad marched toward Baghdad to depose him. During this march, his army crossed the Zagros Mountains. A blizzard struck the troops. Thousands of warriors died in the storm. This forced his generals to return home.
In 1218, a major turning point occurred with the Mongols. Genghis Khan wanted to establish trade relations. He sent an embassy to Muhammad. One report says the group had 100 Muslim merchants and one Mongol leader. Another report says there were 450 people. Muhammad suspected they were spies. His governor, Inalchuq, seized their goods and executed the party. Genghis Khan sent three more men to resolve the issue. Muhammad executed the envoys as well. These actions triggered a massive Mongol retaliation. Genghis Khan sent a force of 100,000 to 150,000 men. They crossed the Jaxartes in 1219. They sacked Samarkand, Bukhara, and Otrar.
The Mongol invasion led to the end of the empire. The Mongols also captured Muhammad's capital, Urgench. Muhammad fled the onslaught to find safety. He sought refuge in Khorasan. He eventually moved to an island in the Caspian Sea. This island was near the port of Abaskun. He died of pleurisy there in 1221. Pleurisy is an inflammation of the lungs. His son, Jalal al-Din Mangburni, succeeded him as ruler. The fall of the Khwarazmian Empire changed the history of Central Asia forever.
