Ancient stories tell us that Parnassus was a very holy place. Many Greek myths are set on these slopes. The Muses, who are spirits of music and poetry, were said to live here. The god Apollo was also linked to the mountain. The famous musician Orpheus lived here with his mother, Calliope. Apollo even gave Orpheus a golden lyre to play. Other myths say the winged horse Pegasus lived here too. The mountain was also sacred to the god Dionysus.

Today, many people visit the National Park of Parnassus to see nature. The park was first started in 1938 to protect the land. It is now a protected area for birds and other wildlife.

Mount Parnassus is a massive mountain range located in Central Greece.

Parnassus Dodwell.jpg
Parnassus Dodwell.jpg
It is one of the highest and largest mountainous regions in Mainland Greece. The range stretches across three different prefectures: Boeotia, Phthiotis, and Phocis. The highest peak in the range is named Liakouras. It reaches an altitude of 2,457 meters (8,061 feet). To the northwest, the range connects to Mount Giona. To the south, it connects to Mount Kirphe. The mountains are bordered by the Boeotian Kephissus valley to the east and the Amfissa valley to the west.

The geology of Parnassus is quite unique. The mountain is primarily composed of limestone. However, it also contains rich deposits of bauxite. Bauxite is a type of aluminum ore. Since the end of the 1930s, people have systematically mined this ore. This process involves extracting the bauxite to be converted into aluminum oxide and then into aluminum. While this provides a resource, the mining has resulted in ecological damage to parts of the mountain. The mountain also plays a vital role in the local water cycle. As the winter snow melts, it provides essential municipal water for the surrounding communities.

The climate on Mount Parnassus is characterized by very cold winters and cool summers. These conditions create different opportunities for visitors throughout the year. During the three warm seasons, the range offers an abundance of trails for hiking. In the winter, the entire range opens up for skiing. The Parnassos Ski Centre is the largest ski center in Greece. It consists of two main sections called Kellaria and Fterolakka. A smaller center called Gerontovrahos sits across a ridge from Kellaria.

The ski resort has grown significantly through various stages of construction. Work began in 1975 and the first two drag lifts operated in 1976. In 1981, the Kellaria area was completed. The Hermes chair lift began operating in the 1987–1988 winter season. By 1993, the resort installed the first high-speed quad lift in Greece, named Hercules. Today, the center operates 16 different lifts. These include eight-seater cabins, four-seater chair lifts, and several drag and baby lifts. The resort features 25 marked ski runs and about 15 ski routes. The longest single run measures 2,500 meters.

Ancient Greek mythology gives the mountain a deep cultural significance. Parnassus was considered a sacred place for several gods. It was sacred to Apollo and the Corycian nymphs. It was also sacred to Dionysus and the Dionysian mysteries. The mountain was famously known as the home of the Muses. These were spirits associated with poetry, music, and learning. The myth of Orpheus is closely tied to the area. Orpheus lived on Parnassus with his mother, the muse Calliope. During this time, he met Apollo and received a golden lyre. Other legends place the winged horse Pegasus or the ark of Deucalion on these slopes.

The origin of the name "Parnassus" remains a subject of scholarly debate. There is a significant gap in the proto-history of the name. While Mycenaean settlements lived nearby, the name does not appear in Linear B script. Philologist Leonard Robert Palmer suggested the name might come from the Luwian language. In this theory, "parnassas" would mean "the mountain of the house of the god." This fits the mountain's reputation as a holy site. However, there is no archaeological evidence to prove an Anatolian presence. The ethnicity of the people who first named the mountain remains unknown.

Today, the mountain is a protected natural area. The National Park of Parnassus was founded in 1938 to preserve the habitat. While the park was once dormant due to wars, it has since become a focus for ecology. It is now a protected area under the Natura 2000 system. This helps protect endemic flora like the Parnassian peony and the Cephalonian fir tree.

The park also provides a home for wildlife, including wolves, boars, and birds of prey. Beyond nature, the mountain's legacy lives on in art. The "Parnassism" movement in 19th-century France even took its name from this legendary home of the Muses.
