More than 70% of the annual rain falls between June and September. 
Flora on the mountain changes based on the elevation. Lower areas have subtropical evergreen forests. These include oaks, laurels, and Schima trees. Above 1500 meters, the forests become mixed evergreen and deciduous. Higher still, you find conifer forests. Above 2800 meters, the land turns into subalpine shrubland. The mountain is famous for its endemic plants. These are species found nowhere else. There are about 100 such species. These include the Magnolia omeiensis and the Abies fabri fir tree. 
Animals also thrive in this diverse environment. Scientists have recorded about 2,300 different animal species. This includes 51 mammals and 256 birds. There are also 34 reptiles and 33 amphibians. You might find the Asian black bear or the red panda here. Tibetan macaques are very common near tourist paths. One famous macaque is an elderly female named Xing Xing. She has millions of views on YouTube. Visitors should be careful with monkeys. They may grab at clothing or bite if they feel irritated. 
Visiting the mountain requires significant effort. The site is very large. A winding footpath can take several days to walk. Many people use cable cars to reach the Jinding area.
