A protective ditch and a wooden fence, or palisade, surround the entire complex. These castles were highly effective for defense and were relatively easy to build. They used unskilled labor to create formidable military positions across northern Europe.

The design functions through a clear sequence of defensive layers. First, workers dug a deep ditch to create a barrier. The soil from this ditch was used to build the motte.

This mound provided a high vantage point for the keep. From the keep, defenders could command the entire circuit of defenses. The bailey served as a secondary layer of protection.

A bridge or a set of steps connected the bailey to the high motte. This allowed people to move between the two sections quickly.

There were several distinct parts to the castle's architecture. The motte itself could vary greatly in size and shape. Some mottes were circular, while others, like Cabal Tump, were square.

The keep on the motte could be a simple tower or a grander building. Some wooden keeps included bretèches, which are small balconies projecting from upper floors. These balconies allowed defenders to cover the base of the walls. To prevent fire during a siege, wooden structures were sometimes covered in animal skins and hides.

The bailey acted as the economic and social center of the castle.

It contained a wide variety of essential buildings. You might find a great hall, kitchens, and a chapel there. There were also barracks for soldiers, stables for horses, and workshops like forges. While a stone keep could take up to ten years to complete, a motte-and-bailey was much faster. This speed made them very attractive to leaders. They were often built using peasant labor. In some cases, such as at Clones in Ireland, builders had to pay for imported labor. The cost for such work reached £20 in 1211. This efficiency allowed for rapid fortification of new territories.

These castles relate to broader ideas of geography and engineering. Builders chose locations based on the soil type. Clay soils allowed for steeper, more stable mottes. Sandier soils required a more gentle incline to prevent sliding.

Builders also used different layers, like gravel or chalk, to add strength. Sometimes, they even used nearby rivers to create water-filled moats. This shows how medieval engineers adapted their designs to the natural world around them.
