Steven Patrick Morrissey is a prominent English singer and songwriter.

He is recognized for his deep baritone voice and highly distinctive lyrical style. His songwriting often explores themes of emotional isolation, sexual longing, and self-deprecation. He also uses dark humor and takes anti-establishment stances in his work. Morrissey is considered a seminal figure in several musical genres. These include indie pop, indie rock, and Britpop. His cultural impact is so significant that his work is now a subject of academic study. In a 2006 BBC Culture Show poll, he was voted the second-greatest living British cultural icon.

Morrissey's musical identity was largely formed during his time with the rock band the Smiths. He formed this group with guitarist Johnny Marr in 1982. As the frontman, Morrissey cultivated a specific image as a social outsider. He famously wore a trademark quiff hairstyle. He also avoided traditional rock machismo, instead embracing a sexually ambiguous persona. The band achieved rapid national recognition with their self-titled debut album. They followed this with three more studio albums: Meat Is Murder (1985), The Queen Is Dead (1986), and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987). These releases produced several top twenty singles on the UK charts. However, personal differences between Morrissey and Marr led to the band's separation in 1987.

Following the end of the Smiths, Morrissey launched a successful solo career in 1988. His debut solo album was titled Viva Hate. He continued this success with several follow-up albums. These included Kill Uncle (1991), Your Arsenal (1992), and Vauxhall and I (1994). All of these records entered the top ten on the UK Albums Chart. To replace Marr, he worked with main co-writers Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer. During this period, his public image began to change. He moved toward a more robust look that used patriotic imagery and working-class masculinity. While his mid-to-late 1990s albums like Southpaw Grammar (1995) and Maladjusted (1997) charted, they were less well received.

Morrissey's early life in Manchester heavily influenced his creative perspective. He was born on 22 May 1959, to Irish Catholic immigrants. His family lived in the Queen's Square area of Hulme. During the 1960s, many Victorian-era houses in Hulme were demolished during "slum clearance." This forced his family to move to a council house in Stretford in 1970. As a child, he was deeply affected by the Moors murders. These local crimes inspired the lyrics to the Smiths song "Suffer Little Children." He also experienced the anti-Irish sentiment present in British society at the time. His mother, a librarian, encouraged his early interest in reading and literature.

His education and early interests provided the foundation for his writing. He attended St Wilfred's Primary School and later St Mary's Secondary Modern School. He found his secondary school experience unpleasant and described it as "evil and brutal." He later spoke about being subjected to corporal punishment there. This experience became the subject of the song "The Headmaster Ritual." After leaving school, he attended Stretford Technical College. There, he earned O-Levels in English literature, sociology, and the General Paper. Before his music career took off, he worked various jobs. These included roles as a civil service clerk, a record store salesperson, and a hospital porter.

Morrissey's literary interests were diverse and deeply ingrained in his work. He idolized the Irish author Oscar Wilde and the American actor James Dean.

He even published a book about James Dean. He also drew inspiration from feminist literature and 1960s pop music. His fascination with working-class life was influenced by the soap opera Coronation Street and the play A Taste of Honey. These influences helped him create lyrics that felt authentic to his roots. His transition from a music journalist and author to a global performer shows his multifaceted talent. He has since released several books, including an autobiography in 2013 and a novel in 2015.

Throughout his career, Morrissey has remained a highly controversial and polarizing figure. This is largely due to his outspoken nature and forthright opinions. He is a known advocate for vegetarianism and animal rights. He has also been a vocal critic of the monarchy and various prominent politicians. Additionally, he has supported right-wing activism regarding British heritage. He has defended specific visions of national identity while critiquing the effects of immigration on the UK. Despite these controversies, his musical legacy remains vast.
