In 1922, Schlick took a major position at the University of Vienna. He held the chair of Naturphilosophie, a position once held by Ludwig Boltzmann. There, he organized a regular meeting for scientists and philosophers. These meetings happened on Thursday evenings in a chemistry building. The group was initially called the Ernst Mach Association. It eventually became known globally as the Vienna Circle. Members included Hans Hahn, Rudolf Carnap, and Kurt Gödel.

The Vienna Circle studied the foundations of mathematics and language. They were deeply influenced by the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein wrote a famous book called Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. This book proposed a logical theory of symbolism and language. He argued that only truths of definition are self-evident. These include the rules of formal logic and mathematics. For all other statements, Schlick insisted on using empirical evidence. Empirical evidence is information gathered through our senses and observations. He believed that statements without such evidence were "metaphysical." To the Vienna Circle, metaphysics was considered meaningless or nonsense.

Schlick also addressed the complex problem of free will. Many thinkers believed science and free will could not coexist. Schlick argued this was a "pseudo-problem" caused by a misunderstanding. He noted that the word "law" has two different meanings. In legal systems, a law is a rule for behavior. In science, a natural law is simply a description of behavior. Because scientific laws describe what happens, they do not cause compulsion. This distinction helped clarify the relationship between science and human freedom.

Schlick's life ended tragically in 1936. While he was walking up the university steps, he was shot. The attacker was a former student named Johann Nelböck. Nelböck claimed that Schlick's philosophy had affected his moral restraint. He also expressed personal grievances during his trial. This violent event became a major topic in the city. It was often used by political groups to spread nationalist sentiments. Despite this sad end, Schlick's legacy as a founder of logical positivism remains vital in modern philosophy.
