The Moravian Church is a very old group.

It started a long time ago in a land called Bohemia. A man named Jan Hus helped start it. He wanted people to pray in their own way.

Later, people fled to a place called Herrnhut. They built a new village there to live together. They like to sing music and do good works.

They also travel to many lands to share their faith. Today, one million people follow these ways. It is a group with a long history.

A leader named Count Zinzendorf helped them settle there. This group became a strong community. They focused on prayer and helping others. They even kept a watch of prayer going for 100 years!

Moravians are known for traveling to share their faith. They were among the first to send missionaries to many lands. They went to places like Africa and the Americas.

Today, about one million people belong to this church. They value music and doing good works in the world.

By 1457, a group called the Unity of the Brethren was founded in Kunvald. This group was led by people like Gregory the Patriarch. They lived by very strict rules from the Bible. They did not swear oaths or fight others. They also tried not to collect too much wealth. Later, these people had to go underground to stay safe. They were sometimes called the "Hidden Seed." In 1722, a group of these people fled to Saxony. They settled on the lands of Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf. They built a new village called Herrnhut.

Life in Herrnhut changed in a big way in 1727. The community felt a deep sense of love for one another.

This led to a period of great growth and renewal. The Moravians started many important traditions during this time. They kept a watch of prayer going 24 hours a day for 100 years. They also created the Daily Watchwords for prayer. They built many settlements that focused on simple living. These places helped people live out their faith together. They also focused on teaching children and supporting missions.

Today, the Moravian Church has about one million members worldwide. They are well known for being the first large Protestant group to send missionaries. They sent people to the Caribbean, Africa, and the Americas. They were even the first to send regular people, not just leaders, as missionaries. The church uses the Lamb of God as its emblem. This symbol shows a lamb with a victory flag. It reminds followers to follow their faith with joy. Their history connects many different lands and cultures together.

By 1457, a group of followers became an organized body called the Unity of the Brethren.

They were founded in Kunvald, Bohemia. Leaders like Gregory the Patriarch and the teacher Peter Chelcicky were very influential. This group followed the Sermon on the Mount very strictly. They practiced non-resistance and did not swear oaths. They also avoided accumulating great wealth. In the middle of the 16th century, Protestantism was very strong in the Bohemian Crown Lands. As many as 90 percent of the subjects were Protestant. The church established many schools and printing shops to help educate the population.

This era of growth ended during the Counter-Reformation. The Habsburg rulers supported the Jesuits to establish Catholic institutions. In 1582, Protestant schools were forced to close. Following the Battle of White Mountain in 1620, many Protestant nobles were executed or expelled. The population of the region declined from over 3 million to about 800,000 people. The Brethren were forced to live in secret. They were sometimes called the "Hidden Seed." This group survived in small, isolated communities in Moravia. They also spread to places like the Low Countries and Poland.

A major renewal occurred in the 18th century. In 1722, a group of these refugees fled to Saxony to escape persecution. They settled on the estate of Count Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf.

They founded a new village called Herrnhut. After some early disagreements, the community adopted the Brotherly Agreement on 12 May 1727. This led to a spiritual transformation in August 1727. The community grew rapidly and became a center for Christian mission work.

They established a watch of continuous prayer that lasted for 100 years.

The Moravian Church became a leader in global missionary work.

They were the first large-scale Protestant missionary movement. They were also the first to send lay people, or non-clergy, as missionaries. Within 30 years of the Herrnhut revival, they sent hundreds of people to many regions. These included the Caribbean, Africa, the Americas, the Arctic, and the Far East. They were the first Protestant group to minister to slaves. Zinzendorf’s connections to royalty helped direct early missions to the Dano-Norwegian Empire.

The church maintains several distinct identities and traditions today. The modern Moravian Church is one branch of this long history. Other groups, such as the more conservative Unity of the Brethren in Texas, share the same theological roots. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the Czechoslovak Hussite Church also follows this tradition. The Moravian emblem is the Lamb of God with a flag of victory.

The Latin inscription reads, "Agnus Dei Victor est; sequamur eum." This means, "Our Lamb has conquered; let us follow Him." This history connects ancient Bohemian reform to a modern global community.
