This river runs from east to west. It splits Monterrey into north and south halves. Most of the year, the surface of the river looks dry. However, water still flows deep underground. The river eventually drains into the San Juan River and the Rio Grande. The city is surrounded by many different towns. For example, San Pedro Garza García is to the west. To the north, you will find San Nicolás de los Garza.

Long ago, different groups of people lived in this area. These were indigenous nomad groups like the Azalapas and Coahuiltecos. They left behind cave paintings and carved stones in the mountains. In 1596, Diego de Montemayor founded the city. He led a group of 13 families to the area. They built the settlement near a water spring called Ojos de Agua de Santa Lucia. This spot is where a museum and a riverwalk are today. The city was named after the Count of Monterrey from Spain.

Monterrey grew very quickly during the 1900s. A large steel company was founded in 1900. This helped the city become an industrial hub. Today, the city makes many things like steel, cement, and glass. It also makes auto parts and brews beer. The city has also faced hard times. In 1988, Hurricane Gilbert caused great damage. In 2010, Hurricane Alex brought record-breaking rain and floods.

The geography of Monterrey is defined by its dramatic mountain surroundings. The city sits at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range.

A major symbol of the city is the Cerro de la Silla, or Saddle Mountain. To the west, the Cerro de las Mitras rises above the landscape. These peaks resemble the tall hats, called mitres, worn by bishops. The Santa Catarina River bisects the city from east to west. While the surface is dry for most of the year, water flows deep underground. This river eventually drains into the San Juan River and the Rio Grande.

Before European settlers arrived, the valley was home to indigenous nomad groups. Historians identify four major groups: the Azalapas, Huachichiles, Coahuiltecos, and Borrados. These people left behind carved stone and cave paintings in the local mountains. In the 16th century, the Spanish attempted to colonize the area. One early expedition named the site Santa Lucia, but they were forced to flee. Eventually, Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva negotiated with King Philip II of Spain. He sought to establish the New Kingdom of León, also known as Nuevo León.

On September 20, 1596, Diego de Montemayor led 13 families to found the city. They settled next to a water spring called Ojos de Agua de Santa Lucia. This location is where the Santa Lucía riverwalk and a museum stand today. The city's name honors Gaspar de Zúñiga, the 5th Count of Monterrey. He served as the viceroy of New Spain from 1595 to 1603. During the Spanish colonial period, Monterrey remained a relatively small settlement. It served as a trade link between San Antonio, Tampico, and Saltillo.

The 19th century brought significant political and military changes. After the Mexican War of Independence, Monterrey became a vital economic center. It maintained balanced ties between Europe, the United States, and Mexico City. However, the era was marked by political instability. The city saw two American invasions and an internal secession war. In 1846, the Battle of Monterrey occurred during the Mexican–American War. This battle involved intense hand-to-hand combat within the city center.

Industrialization transformed Monterrey during the 20th century. The arrival of the railroad helped businesses grow rapidly. In 1900, the Monterrey Foundry was established, which accelerated industrial growth. Today, the city is a leader in steel, cement, glass, auto parts, and brewing. The working class developed a unique culture of solidarity. Workers from different companies often supported one another during strikes. This solidarity helped them fight for better pay and safer conditions. The city also became a hub for education, with institutions like the Autonomous University of Nuevo León.

Nature remains a vital part of the Monterrey experience. Much of the surrounding mountains belong to the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park. This area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The park includes diverse environments like the forested Parque Ecológico Chipinque. Visitors can explore the Garcia Caves, which contain stalagmite formations and snail fossils.

The region also faces environmental challenges. In 2022, a severe drought caused water services to be limited. This led to the construction of a second aqueduct to help supply the city. Despite these challenges, Monterrey remains a highly developed and significant global city.
