The Portuguese were there for a long time. They even built a famous fort called Fort Jesus. Later, the Omani Empire also had influence over the city. In the late 1800s, the British took control. Mombasa was even the first capital of British East Africa. Eventually, the capital was moved to Nairobi in 1907. This happened because the ground in Mombasa was quite swampy.

It sits along the edge of the Indian Ocean. The city is the capital of Mombasa County. It is also the second-largest city in Kenya. According to a 2019 census, about 1,208,333 people live there. Mombasa is a vital economic hub for the region. It features an extra-large port and an international airport.

The geography of Mombasa is defined by its relationship with the water. The city is centered on Mombasa Island. This island is separated from the mainland by two large waterways. These are known as Tudor Creek in the north and Port Reitz in the south. The topography of the area is mostly flat. The city sprawls from the island onto the surrounding mainland. People move between these areas using the Nyali Bridge, the Makupa Causeway, or the Likoni Ferry.

Mombasa has a tropical wet and dry climate. Because it is located near the equator, temperature changes between seasons are slight. The amount of rainfall varies depending on the time of year. April and May are typically the rainiest months. In contrast, rainfall is minimal during January and February. The city faces modern environmental challenges due to climate change. Rising sea levels cause coastal erosion. This erosion increases the frequency of annual floods. In October 2006, a large flood affected 60,000 people.

The history of Mombasa is ancient and deeply connected to trade. Kenyan school books date the founding of the city to 900 AD. It was already a prosperous trading town by the 12th century. The Arab geographer al-Idrisi mentioned the city in 1151. Legends link its founding to two rulers: Mwana Mkisi and Shehe Mvita. Mwana Mkisi was a queen from a pre-Islamic era. She founded Kongowea, the original urban settlement on the island. Shehe Mvita later established the first permanent stone mosque.

For centuries, Mombasa served as a key node in Indian Ocean trading networks. It connected Africa to the Persian Empire, the Arabian Peninsula, India, and China. The city exported valuable goods like ivory, millet, sesamum, and coconuts.

Architecture in the city reflects this diverse history. The Mnara Mosque was built around 1300. The Mandhry Mosque was built in 1570. It features a minaret with a unique ogee arch. This style suggests that Swahili architecture was an indigenous African development.

Many different powers have controlled Mombasa due to its strategic location. The Portuguese arrived in 1498 when Vasco da Gama visited the area. They ruled the city during two different periods in the 16th and 17th centuries. They built Fort Jesus to help administer the region.

Later, the Omani Empire gained influence over the city in 1698. Mombasa was also briefly under a British protectorate in 1824. In 1887, the British East Africa Association took control. Mombasa became the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate. However, the capital was moved to Nairobi in 1907. Medical officers warned that the ground in Mombasa was too swampy. This move helped mitigate the spread of disease.

Today, the city is a center for tourism and modern industry. The Central Business District features buildings painted blue and white. These colors represent the Indian Ocean.
