Khan established a single-party republic. This event ended more than 225 years of continuous monarchical government in Afghanistan. Zahir Shah sent a letter from Rome to Kabul. In the letter, he accepted the change and declared his abdication. 
Zahir Shah lived in exile near Rome for 29 years. He lived in a villa in the Olgiata community. During this time, he enjoyed gardening, chess, and golf. He faced many challenges while living abroad. In 1991, he survived an assassination attempt by a man named Osama bin Laden. Various international groups tried to persuade him to return as a neutral leader. However, many political efforts to bring him back were blocked by other nations. 
He finally returned to Afghanistan on April 18, 2002. He was 87 years old at the time. He arrived in Kabul after the end of the Taliban government. His return was widely welcomed by the people. He was given the title "Father of the Nation." He held this title until he passed away on July 23, 2007. His life connected the ancient history of Afghan kings to the modern era.
