There are many specific sizes called scales for these models. A scale like 1:48 means one inch equals four feet. Some models are huge, while others are tiny. Plastic kits often come in sizes like 1:72 or 1:24. Metal models can be as small as 1:600 scale. Airlines sometimes use large models to promote their business. They might give them to officials or travel agencies. These models help celebrate new flight paths or big achievements.

These sizes provided a good compromise between size and fine detail. After the war, manufacturers continued to use these established scales.

Builders often use light woods like balsa or bamboo. They might also use foam polystyrene or even carbon fiber. To create a smooth surface, they may use aircraft dope or tissue paper. For very light models, builders use a special microfilm covering. This is made by spreading lacquer over water and lifting a thin film. Larger, powered models often use heat-shrinkable synthetic fabrics. Some modern kits are sold as "Almost Ready to Fly" (ARF) to save time.

Free-flight (F/F) models are uncontrolled and rely on natural stability. They are often unpowered gliders or rubber-powered planes.

Control line (C/L) models are tethered to a central pivot by wires. The pilot controls the plane as it flies in circles. Finally, radio-controlled aircraft use a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter sends signals to servos that move the flight controls. Modern models even use flight control computers to fly autonomously. This technology is very similar to how quadcopters operate today.
