Mobile is a significant coastal city located in Alabama, United States.
The city's origins are tied to the Mobile tribe.
Life in the early French colony was difficult. Disease and flooding frequently plagued the settlers at the Old Mobile Site. In 1704, a ship named Pélican brought 23 Frenchwomen to the colony. Many passengers had contracted yellow fever in Havana. This caused deaths among both colonists and Native Americans. African slaves were also brought to Mobile from Saint-Domingue. By 1708, the colony had 279 people, but it shrank to 178 by 1710. Consequently, Bienville ordered the settlement to move downriver. In 1711, Mobile moved to its current location. This site sits at the confluence of the Mobile River and Mobile Bay.
Mobile has changed hands between several different nations. After the French moved, the capital of La Louisiane shifted to Biloxi in 1720. Mobile became a regional center for trade and military operations. In 1723, builders began a brick fort called Fort Condé.
The 19th century brought massive economic shifts to the region.
Mobile is also recognized as a major cultural hub. The city hosts several art museums and a professional ballet company.

Today, the economy of Mobile is diverse and modern. The city has moved beyond its historical reliance on cotton. Manufacturing has become a vital part of the local economy. Shipbuilding and steel production are two major industries.
