A moat is a deep, wide ditch.

Moats were made to help with defense. They act as a first line of protection. A moat makes it hard to use siege weapons. These are big tools used to attack walls. A water moat also stops people from mining. Mining is when people dig tunnels under a castle.
In Africa, the Walls of Benin were very big. They used a ditch and a dike. A dike is a wall made of earth. This structure was the largest man-made thing in the world. It was even longer than the Great Wall of China.
In Japan, castles often have many moats. These moats can be in circles. Some moats help protect other buildings too. Even today, the Tokyo Imperial Palace has moats.
A moat is a deep and wide ditch. It is dug around a castle, a town, or a building. These ditches provide a first line of defense.

Moats work by creating a difficult obstacle. A moat makes it hard to bring heavy siege weapons to a wall. These weapons include siege towers and battering rams.
People have used moats for a very long time. Early evidence was found at the fortress of Buhen in Nubia. There are also ancient moats in the ruins of Babylon.
Some moats in history were truly huge. The Walls of Benin in Nigeria were a massive system of ditches and dikes. This was the largest man-made structure in the world. It was even longer than the Great Wall of China.
Moats are still used in our modern world. Some buildings use dry moats for light and fresh air. The James Farley Post Office in New York City uses one.
A moat is a deep, wide ditch dug around a castle, town, or fortification. Historically, these structures served as a primary line of defense to protect important sites.
Moats function by creating a physical obstacle that prevents attackers from reaching a structure. In a medieval setting, a moat made it very difficult to use siege weapons. Siege towers and battering rams had to be brought directly against a wall to work. If a moat was filled with water, it also prevented mining. Mining is the practice of digging tunnels under walls to make them collapse. A water-filled ditch makes this type of underground attack extremely difficult.
There are several specific types of moats used in fortification. A segmented moat contains both a dry section and a water-filled section. If a dry moat cuts across a narrow part of a peninsula, it is called a neck ditch. Moats that separate different parts of a castle, such as the inner and outer wards, are known as cross ditches. In Japan, some mountain castles use a specific type of dry moat called a kure. These involve parallel trenches dug into the sides of a mountain.
Archaeological evidence shows that humans have used moats for thousands of years. Some of the earliest examples are found at the fortress of Buhen in Nubia. Evidence also exists in the ruins of Babylon and in reliefs from ancient Egypt and Assyria. In Southeast Asia, sites like Noen U-Loke show early moats that may have served defensive or agricultural purposes. The word "moat" itself comes from Middle English and Old French. It was originally used to describe the central mound of a castle before it applied to the excavated ring.
Some historical moats were massive engineering feats. The Walls of Benin in present-day Nigeria were a combination of ditches and dikes. These walls were the largest man-made structure in the world. They covered 6,500 square kilometers and consisted of more than 500 interconnected boundaries. The total length was over 16,000 kilometers. This is four times longer than the Great Wall of China. Construction began around 800 and continued into the mid-15th century.
In Asia, Japanese castles often featured elaborate systems of concentric moats. These could include up to three rings of water around the castle. The outer moat often protected support buildings as well as the main castle. In the feudal period, many of these were dry trenches, but most were filled with water. The Tokyo Imperial Palace still uses an active moat system today. It serves as a waterway for rental boats, fishing ponds, and even restaurants.
Modern architecture still utilizes the concept of the moat for various purposes. In the 16th century, the trace italienne style used moats to protect low walls and bastions. Today, dry moats are used in buildings like the James Farley Post Office in New York City. These allow light and fresh air to reach basement workspaces.
