Minamoto no Yoritomo was a powerful samurai and a daimyo, which is a type of feudal lord.

Yoritomo’s early life was shaped by intense political conflict. He was born in a family villa in Nagoya. His father was Minamoto no Yoshitomo, a leader of the Minamoto clan. His mother was Yura-Gozen, who belonged to the influential Fujiwara clan. In 1156, a conflict called the Hōgen Rebellion broke out. This war split the Minamoto clan into different sides. After the Heiji rebellion in 1159, Yoritomo’s family lost their influence. The Taira clan became the leaders of Japan. Because of his young age, Yoritomo was spared from execution. However, he was exiled to live as a monk in a temple.
During his exile, Yoritomo prepared for his future role. He married Hōjō Masako, the daughter of Hōjō Tokimasa. This marriage connected him to the Hōjō clan. In 1180, a call to arms was made by Prince Mochihito. This event started the Genpei War between the Minamoto and the Taira clans. Yoritomo established a base of operations in Kamakura. He faced a major setback at the Battle of Ishibashiyama. A night attack by enemies forced him to flee into the mountains. He spent six months in hiding to rebuild his strength and his army.
The war continued for several years with many shifting alliances. Yoritomo’s brothers, Yoshitsune and Noriyori, fought important battles against the Taira. While they fought, Yoritomo built a strong administration in Kamakura. He used this time to create a system of government. In 1185, the Minamoto clan won a decisive victory at the Battle of Dan-no-ura. This victory ended the Taira clan's dominance. Yoritomo also had to defeat his own relatives to secure his power. His cousin, Minamoto no Yoshinaka, had tried to take control of the clan. By defeating both his rivals and the Taira, Yoritomo became the undisputed leader.
In 1192, Yoritomo reached the height of his political influence. He took the title of Sei-i Tai Shōgun. This title translates to "Barbarian-quelling Generalissimo."
Yoritomo expanded his reach into the northern provinces of Mutsu and Dewa. In the summer of 1189, he invaded these areas. He destroyed the capital of Hiraizumi, which was a very grand city. This city was famous for its size and its gold mines.
Historical records provide different views of Yoritomo's character. The Tale of Heiji describes him as very mature for his age. Other texts say he had a large, beautiful face and a graceful appearance. A diary from a messenger noted that his language was civilized. Another writer described him as having a strong body and a firm sense of right and wrong.

Yoritomo’s life connects to the broader study of feudalism and social hierarchy. His creation of the shogunate changed how power was distributed between the Emperor and the military. The samurai caste became the supreme social class during this era. This shift influenced Japanese politics and culture for hundreds of years. By establishing the Kamakura system, he created a model for future military governments. His life shows how individual choices and military strength can transform an entire nation's structure.
